View Full Version : Download Speeds Again...

I didn't like any of the speed checkers I've used thus far, and figured I could write a better one that does not require JavaScript and meta refresh tags and so on (screws up the back button). Plus those are easy to skew the results by hitting back/reload etc...
This one uses a different method, but I'm not sure how accurate it is (my connection has been wierd all day)... so if anyone wants to check it out: http://www.HostFacts.com/cgi-bin/SpeedCheck
All it does is actually sends data to you, but rather than sending a fixed amount of data, counting the seconds, and dividing it out, this one sends as much data as it can for 10 seconds and sees how much it sent - making it just as accurate for a 14.4 as it is for a T1 (not to mention keeping the download time 10 seconds no matter what your connection is :))
Let me know if it works etc... My tests from the web seem relatively accurate so far...

Well, I am certainly not an expert in all this but here is what I got.
Average 129.9 KBPS
I am on a dial up with Prodigy, and according to the little icon at the bottom of my screen, I am hooked up at 53333 bps, which is normal for me.[nbsp][nbsp]

Try #1:
Slowest:[nbsp][nbsp][nbsp][nbsp] 64 kbps
Average:[nbsp][nbsp][nbsp][nbsp] 223.9 kbps
Fastest:[nbsp][nbsp][nbsp][nbsp] 536 kbps
Try #2:
Slowest:[nbsp][nbsp][nbsp][nbsp] 91 kbps
Average:[nbsp][nbsp][nbsp][nbsp] 242.9 kbps
Fastest:[nbsp][nbsp][nbsp][nbsp] 677 kbps
Looks pretty consistent (across tests), and about what I'd expect for this currently unpredictable cable connection.
Nice tool!

Hm... I was working on the script just now, so it's possible you caught it at the wrong time - but if that's what it's showing then it still needs work...
Then again, using my method, a proxy could conceivably interfere with it (giving results faster than it should, since the proxy can accept the data faster)...
Was just an idea - I'll improve on it some more when I get a chance one day... :)

averages of 211kb and 246kb
not bad for a 42kb dialup!
methinks i'm not understanding what was really measured...

I've been messing with it quite a bit - it needs work... :)[nbsp][nbsp]I'm starting to think my theory on a "more accurate" way of measuring the speed isn't the greatest of theories - but I had to try it...
Thanks for the reports, as that helps quite a bit - I *will* find a way to accurately measure speed via a web page :P[nbsp][nbsp]Or not... depends on time ;)

Some of your connection speeds are making me mad over here (especially with this Christmas' DSL plan blow up ;( ). I got:
[nbsp][nbsp]Slowest: 32 kbps
[nbsp][nbsp]Average: 99.7 kbps
[nbsp][nbsp]Fastest: 453 kbps
And I am using a 56K modem, those can't be correct.
The idea sounded good (and accurate), but it sounds like you are going back to the drawing board, Brain.

Hi Justin,
Nope - the thing just plain don't work right for me :D
Slowest: 64 kbps[nbsp][nbsp]
Average: 151.4 kbps[nbsp][nbsp]
Fastest: 522 kbps
That looks great - except that I'm on a 56K modem that's never gone more than 44 kbps in it's life.
Back to the drawing board!
