View Full Version : Archiving
I believe I read FutureQuest backs up the servers every 24 hours...[nbsp][nbsp]What timeframe are those backups kept?[nbsp][nbsp]Until the next 24 hour backup, or maybe a week, or a month.
I would like to understand, in case information from the past is needed to recover lost information.[nbsp][nbsp]
Thank for you help in advance

I am pasting in my response to an email I received a few days ago asking the very same question...
<email>
Right now, we are on a weekly rotation of backups...
Saturday: Zero the File Tapes and run FULL Backup
Sunday -- Friday: Incremental
Friday (after Incremental): device raw dump current week off to tape for offsite storage
The backups are designed for FutureQuest disaster recovery only, and a $50.00 fee is charged if we have to do any file restoration work for site owners...[nbsp][nbsp]Due to this design, I have no reason for historical archives beyond 1 week plus 1 week held in offsite storage...
Our backups are handled by the OSCAR system which has 200Gig of storage capacity and can run full backups of all our servers in a 4 hour timeframe...
</email>
Sidenote: as I add more storage capacity to OSCAR, my overall goal is to achieve 2 months of archival storage with an underlying 'grandfather-father-child' scheme...
Even with this backup system in place, it is absolutely crucial that you maintain your own set of local backups and only utilize our restoration services as a last resort...

Yes, it is a very good idea to hold your own backups. I think it would be a great addition to the CNC to add a feature to do this. It could work by you selecting the path you want to archive, and it would tar it up and compress it.
Then it would provide a link or instructions on downloading it. Then to allow you to zip up information and not worry about going over your disk quota, maybe it could be stored in a temp folder that will be deleted after x hours, and would not count against your storage..
And to complement this it would be cool to have a feature to restore your zip if needed :)
Anyhow I think it would just aid people in the backup process, that do not want to telnet, or are afraid..
