I'm back....[nbsp][nbsp]:P

I think I already know the answer to this, but does, or can, FQ support Oracle's Web DB?[nbsp][nbsp]There is an application designed around it that I will be involved in testing (for a site) and possibly promoting if only I can install it.[nbsp][nbsp]The person who designed it is going to check into porting it to MySQL in case I cannot use Oracle.

By the way, he said his understanding is that Oracle is going the way of Linux and basically giving away the software as a free download, although you have to buy a license or something if you use it for profit...[nbsp][nbsp]Does anyone know anything about this?

Thanks,
Database

edit: Minor detail, but I think he said Apache, not Linux...

edit 2: For those of you who inquired about the other database project, don't worry, it's a different one.[nbsp][nbsp]:)[nbsp][nbsp]I still don't have much information on that one...

Oracle, hmmmm - that thing is a monster...

Unless you are building some *extremely* complicated database applications, then I could not recommend Oracle...

I would use Oracle for a multi-office scenario where the data must be kept replicated across all databases...

Oracle just does not fit into the FutureQuest scheme of things...[nbsp][nbsp]MySQL has found a perfect home here for all of our DB needs in features, capability, raw horsepower, and speed... :)

Hi Terra,

Thanks for the response.[nbsp][nbsp]That's pretty much what I figured, but it never hurts to ask...

I haven't yet seen or worked with the database in question (don't have Oracle ;)[nbsp][nbsp]), but it appears to be pretty large and complex.[nbsp][nbsp]It is designed to handle everything a university athletic department could throw at it:[nbsp][nbsp]recruiting (both for coaches and athletes), accounting, gear and inventory, automated meet entries online for all schools, possibly event timing and scoring, and most importantly for my application, making race results easily searchable on the web.[nbsp][nbsp]As you can see, I would be using a very small section of its capabilities, so if the author is able to transfer it over to MySQL that would definitely be preferable.
