RaGHGAHAHAHahahahghahahHA! (as The Hulk would say)...
I get home with a note that there's a package for me (MY PHP BOOK!), I sprint up to where the packages are usually kept, and the office is CLOSED by 10 minutes! I have to pick it up tomorrow.
My local bookstore, BORDERS, told me they weren't getting the book until June, so I ordered it at Amazon, I didn't check with Barnes & Noble because I've boycotted them.
Anyway, I'll give everybody an update, as I plan to devote most of tomorrow evening to reading it.
Paul, most heros are zeros, don't you know.

Amazon delivery came about 2 minutes ago :)
Opening it up now... and will check out the CD that came with it to get an overview :)
Lotsa code :) Seems like a good general overview of the language and a great starting base.... The CD has php 3.0.6 and apache and all of the code from the code base libraries online and the php.net manual is on it etc.... I'll have it read by the end of week I hope and you'll probably hear/see a lot from me as I begin to utilize midnightmerchants.com for more of my silly testing:)
All in all from the first 5 minute glance the book looks Very Nice and Very Worth Having for all...from the first timer to the old timer... looks like a nice ref :)

WooHoo!!! More Input #5
[This message has been edited by Deb (edited 05-17-99)]
Woohoo!
Mine came yesterday too![nbsp][nbsp]I couldn't believe it - normally, books are left at our door.[nbsp][nbsp]So I kept checking and checking... I was so disappointed.[nbsp][nbsp]Then last night, my husband checked the mailbox (unusually late) - it was there all that time![nbsp][nbsp]I went to bed with it and stayed up much too late :)
I love it. I agree with everything Deb said.
I just posted under the UBB thread that I wish we could all get together & develop our own forum pg with it...
Always biting off more than I can chew...

I'm through about 6 chapters, I found quite a few spelling errors, but that's the only complaint. I didn't believe that it's about 550 pages, with a CD-ROM, for about $35.
As an reference, Chapter 6 starts on page 67, and gets into Classes. If you don't know any programming, this book may not be for you, but it touches on the basics. I'm just glad it doesn't hold your hand through every chapter like a "Dummies" book does.

Justin, just do what I did and you'll never have to wait. Sign up for Amazon's Premium Preferred Select Reader program. You buy one of all books in stock and they send every new release as soon as it is available. :0 [hehe]

So THAT's how they've solved that overflow problem. I knew that the Vatican and the British gov't had refused them storage space, but I never knew they'd be so ingenious! Do they have a "volume" discount? ;)

I agree overall on the PHP3 book...
Only bad thing about it, is PHP is a moving target - rapidly developing...
As a no-holds barred quick reference book for syntatical sugar, it does it's job quite nicely...
Reminiscent of the Perl5 quick reference guide, which is my most heavily used book...
The only gotcha of the PHP language, that snags me often, is that variables outside of functions are not truly global unless you tell the function they are...[nbsp][nbsp]This has led to frustration on more than one occasion for me...[nbsp][nbsp]The other gotcha is PHP is close to perl in many respects, but just enough difference to cause brain cramps...[nbsp][nbsp]I miss the idioms of perl, like creating @arrays on the fly without having to state 'list($blah, $blah2)'...[nbsp][nbsp]PHP3 is a very nice language with a bullseye target in mind...[nbsp][nbsp]PHP3 makes you think carefully about the structure of your code, and is not as forgiving as perl is to offuscation...
One last passing thought...[nbsp][nbsp]Perl allows you to run your scripts as your user/group id, whereas PHP3 does not (apache/apache)...

WOO HOO!!! I am soooo happy with this book :D[nbsp][nbsp]I'm going to read every page!
Seriously though, even just today I found myself having to refer to the php site again to check something simple - having a book handy is going to be awesome.
The CD comes with all kinds of examples, Apache 1.3.3, Xitami web server, and other stuff - it's awesome![nbsp][nbsp]I love Amazon.com :)

Terra,
Isn't PHP much easier on the server?[nbsp][nbsp]
Please tell me it really is the best. :o[nbsp][nbsp]
I only have time to learn one thing now, and I want to learn the best.[nbsp][nbsp]I was under the impression that cgi/perl was not the best option due to server strain and not optimal for web development...
Okay.. what's the verdict? Now that everyone has had a little time to digest the.. uh.. digest, what do you think?
I have Amazon bookmarked and the finger on the send button...
