I'm thinking of changing from the UBB discussion forum software to WWWThreads. It requires mySQL, but we're a church website and can't afford the Gold package here at FQ.

Is mySQL available as an optional add-on?

THANKS!

Don't quote me on this - but I don't think that can be added on to a basic package due to the high resouces used. Again, I'm not positive...

But I do want to add that I think WWWThreads is FAR SUPERIOR to the UBB in performance, speed, etc! I just finished installing it for testing purposes (I have a UBB, Phorum, and WWWThreads all, trying to find the best one).

It does need mass customization though http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif But it has a lot of the options that we all wish were in the UBB - each user can select whether they want threaded or linear display, how wide their textarea is, etc. I also like private messages - that's awesome! I plan to add a cussword filter, smiley's, and anything else I can think of http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

The best part is that it is not only free to use, but I can modify and distribute http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif No restrictions on this thing.

Off to add some toys to it now http://www.aota.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

Well, that spikes that idea. I've also been looking at Discus...it has a pretty impressive set of features, too. It's autoinstall and autodebug features were EXTREMELY impressive!

People develop a bond with Ted and his UBB. One-man operation, and he's pretty quick to respond, and he is adding nice features. My only complaint is that the recent code redesign doesn't seem to have been complete enough, and all the hacks that are available are not being incorporated into the main code. Lots of possible reasons as to why but discussing same doesn't change the facts. UBB is nice, but it needs some redesign (code and theory of operation).

Sure would be nice to have an inter-BB conversion program. It'd be to their advantage to write a converter from other systems. Oh well, I can dream, eh? http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif

Will check out Phorum...that one's news to me.

Thanks, Justin!

Phorum is a little simpler to use because it's written in PHP3 - but also relies on a MySQL database. I like it, but it doesn't have individual forums / categories.

Some people like a threaded discussion board, where some like a linear one (like this). WWWThreads gives you the best of both worlds. The users can select their preference. I just realized that I already said that above http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif I feel like a kid with a new toy here http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

Anyway, it needs a way to set the colors from a control panel. Everything else is like that, just not the colors. You have to edit the variables in a file. I'm thinking I can make the script do this automatically. I just need to figure out if you can include a file from within an included file http://www.aota.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

Phorum is a little simpler, and it's not really that impressive. It does use cookies, but that's the extent of it's smarts as far as user prefs. It doesn't support email, registration, profiles, etc.

Oh, well, off to add a feature to the control panel...
