Hi,
I have built two machines that use the Creative Labs 52x CD-ROM. I haven't had any problems with it. It accesses CDs just as soon as the drive is closed. You can pick one up from MWave (www.mwave.com (http://www.mwave.com)) for $36 + S/H (very reasonable). The URL is:
http://direct.mwave.com/mwave/ProdMM-CD-CRE.hmx?UID=&CID=&updepts=MM-CD&DNAME=%3Cb%3ECD+ROM%2FDVD%3C--%2Fb%3E&back=ProdMM-CD-CRE.hmx?

Hope this helps,
Matt

My husband is getting a new desktop shortly - newest fastest bestest blah blah blah.[nbsp][nbsp]We're turning his old machine into the kids' machine, and so are tuning it up a little now.[nbsp][nbsp](I plan to wipe the drive and reinstall only what they need as soon as Jon is all set up on his on own too, it could really use it.)

Now, the operative word in the above paragraph is "old."[nbsp][nbsp]Carbon dating suggests we bought it in 1995.[nbsp][nbsp]It's a Zeos (subsequently became Micron) Pentium I 100 mHz (not a typo.)[nbsp][nbsp]128 MB of RAM.

One thing I was hoping we could upgrade is the CD-ROM, which the kids use heavily for lots of their favorite applications.[nbsp][nbsp]Rewritable type function totally not needed. It's currently a 1996 12x . . . suggestions for brands/favorite shopping sites?
