Hi there.[nbsp][nbsp]Anybody who has done this before can answer this question.
My boss is leaving for a business trip later this month.[nbsp][nbsp]However, he needs access to his PC so he can access some files on there.[nbsp][nbsp]Network traffic at our office is very high and we usually drop files into his computer for his analysis.
We've secured the rental of a laptop computer that he will take with him on his business trip.[nbsp][nbsp]What I need to do is to configure the computer and laptop so that the the following occurs:
1) He dials into his computer
2) He retrieves his files from the HD of his computer
3) He does his analysis on a separate text file.
4) He drops the text file back into his computer, where we will deal with it appropriately.
Suggestions?[nbsp][nbsp]Thanks all.
Eric
My boss is making me run around in circles like a chicken with my head chopped off...[nbsp]
Have you looked into PC Anywhere (http://enterprisesecurity.symantec.com/products/products.cfm?ProductID=2&PID=3873990)?

I don't know if this is the best way, but it's how I keep in touch with my home computer from my classroom. It's an FTP sever, it's easy to set up, and it's free! CeasarFTP

While I may consider those suggestions as I have no problem with working on computer programs, my boss does.[nbsp][nbsp]What's hes looking for is basically a way for him to access his computer directly from his laptop.[nbsp][nbsp]Like a network connection, which creates a new window and displays the contents of his hard drive.
I know that if you run an address from a network (say for the sake of argument the address is //192.191.152.3, which is the address on the network you want to connect to) you can connect directly to the computer from there.[nbsp][nbsp]Is there a similar way to do this via modem?
thanx.

I have never tried this out myself, but have seen it recommended on some mailing list I belong to for mail administrators.
http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/
Basically, allows you to access your computer desktop via a web browser, as one possible option (a Java enabled browser is required).

Bob: File traffic is very high on our network.[nbsp][nbsp]The files range from 100 KB to about 800 KB.[nbsp][nbsp]And about 20 of these files pass through our network in a day.
Besides, using e-mail requires use of an ISP.[nbsp][nbsp]We just want to connect the laptop to the computer directly via phone line, he will access his computer directly without use of an ISP.[nbsp][nbsp]That simple.[nbsp][nbsp]Something on the grounds of "Hyper Terminal" or something like that.
It should be possible, I don't see why we would have to use all these strange funky programs to do what we want to do.[nbsp][nbsp]Besides, my boss is somewhat of a picky person.[nbsp][nbsp]Doesn't like complicated processes.

Not used (never had the need), but does Windows dial-up network server do what you are looking for.[nbsp][nbsp]Can't offer any good sites, but google throws up plenty of suggestions.

I don't understand how you are going to do this without the services of an ISP. Since there will be no local network, he will need someone to provide TCP/IP protocol for him over the phone lines ?

I think people were suggesting these remote management programs, to make things seem simpler. Rather than using FTP, you would use one of these other programs.
Since he will not be using his usual machine, but accessing it from somewhere else, some sort of protocol or program must be used, so that his regular computer can understand the instructions being sent to it from the remote laptop.

My husband suggests, that you could do this:
Put a modem on your boss' regular computer, and install a BBS system on his computer. Then, without the services of an ISP you could dial directly into his computer and do file transfers. (This is how people -- such as my spouse -- ran hobby-style, dialup BBS systems before the Internet became popular.)
Here is a list of software:
http://dmoz.org/Computers/Bulletin_Board_Systems/Software/
However, you will be paying for the long distance calls and I don't think the software will be easier to deal with than the other remote desktops that were recommended.
If you get an ISP account that has national access, you can just pay for local calls, although you would have to pay the monthly ISP fee as well.
hi eric,
you may want to look into Netopia's product Timbuktu Pro at:
http://www.netopia.com/software/products/tb2/2000/
i've used the software before, and it's as simple as "drag and drop" for the files.

Hi Eric,
I may be overlooking something here, but if the file sizes are such that they are relatively manageable, aorund a Mb or so.[nbsp][nbsp]Why not set up a web based email POP account just for this purpose.
The office emails the files to the web based email account, when they are complete.
The Boss accesses them from anywhere he can get connected, downloads them, analyzes them and then emails the text file back to the same web based POP account.[nbsp][nbsp]Where you pick them back up.
Don't know if this is feasible in your situation, but it's the way I have managed some past "Bosses" when they were out of town. ;)
My two cents, for what it's worth :P
Have a Good One

Sheila: We figure that by dialing in to his own computer would be like setting up a network connection by serial port or something like that (he doesn't mind the long distance).[nbsp][nbsp]Given that we are doing a similar serial connection via phone, theoretically, it should not be a problem dialing in and getting the files he needs, just as you would with a network.
We're in Canada.[nbsp][nbsp]My boss is going to the states.

What's wrong with using PC Anywhere?
Seems like it would fit the bill perfect.

I appreciate the advice about PC anywhere, but it appears to be a program you have to pay for.[nbsp][nbsp]My boss has no other business trips forthcoming.
