View Full Version : Netscape installation problem
I've downloaded Navigator 4.08 (don't want the full Communicator - just the browser for site checking) but when I try to extract the .exe file I get the message: "The decompression of %s failed. There may not be enough free disk space available in the TEMP directory".
Can someone help me out, please?

Have you got
set temp=c:\windows\temp
set tmp=c:\windows\temp
or similar in your autoexec.bat?
Thanks for responding, Tibbits.
No, I haven't - should I add it?
<edit> Silly question, I suppose!![nbsp][nbsp]I've now added those lines to the autoexec.bat (and rebooted) but still no joy.[nbsp][nbsp]This problem only seems to be with the Netscape installation - other .exe files work fine.
Any other tips, please?
Thanks again. </edit>

Alternatively, is there somewhere I could download an uncompressed Navigator 4.xx?

Hmm.. the only time I've seen this error is on a font install programme when teh computer had no temp variable set (hence there was not enough space in the temp directory since it didn't exist)
Could it be an error with the file? Have you tried running it through a programme like winzip?
Did you ever get it to work?[nbsp][nbsp]I just saw that problem on a brand new machine yesterday, with huge amounts of RAM and disk space.
It's running Windows 2000, which is a learning curve all its own to me, but I couldn't find anything wrong with the Temp variables or anything else.
Tom
Thanks, Tom - I'd about given up.[nbsp][nbsp]No, I've tried everything I can think of, but still haven't been able to install NS.[nbsp][nbsp]I'm using Win98se.[nbsp][nbsp]It remains a mystery.
Thing is, I don't want to use it as such, just want to check sites on it![nbsp][nbsp]Any clues you come up with would be most welcome.
Thanks again.

I have seen that error, on one of the machines at my school. It's an older machine, about 200 Mghz and probably only 32 Meg of Ram, and running Win95. I recently wanted to install a patch update for the CodeWarrior compiler that I use at work, but it wouldn't extract the patch off the CD.[nbsp][nbsp]It would look like it was doing it, and then at the last moment it would give that error message.
I even Scan Disked the HD, emptied the recycle bin and temp directories, defragged and tried again. No go.
I finally gave up, and decided that on that machine, I'd just run the unpatched version of the compiler. I did all year, last year, and it didn't really seem to be a problem. The CD I'm trying to install from has worked on dozens of other machines just fine, so I don't think that is the problem.
I sure wouldn't mind seeing a solution to this one, though. I've seen it before, too. But at that time, I was installing files from a website that often ended up giving me corrupted files, so I figured it was the files during that episode. (It was the same machine.)
I even tried re-downloading the file but still get the same result - "The decompression of %s failed. There may not be enough free disk space available in the TEMP directory".
Frustrating!

I have encountered that error before. Each time it was due to
a corrupted download. Usually I have to resort to a different
browser or method (eg ftp program or another download manager)
to download it for it to work correctly (downloading it again
using the same browser did not work for me. Don't know why;
could be a bug in that browser handling certain sequences...)
Chris.
Ya know, Chris... you might have something.[nbsp][nbsp]I was downloading Netscape using MSIE and...
I wonder if it's a Netscape "anti-others" thing!?
I tried a download using Opera but got the same results.[nbsp][nbsp]But how to download & install Netscape if you're not already using Netscape?

Try going to the netscape browser archive, here:
http://sillydog.webhanger.com/narchive/
and they have ftp available. Try downloading via ftp instead. (Ditch the browser downloads.)
Good luck!
Just thought I'd post a follow-up.[nbsp][nbsp]I tried FTP but with no better results - still couldn't load.
I just cleared out Win98 and switched to 2000 - downloaded and installed Navigator without problems.[nbsp][nbsp]So it seems as though the trouble may have been with my 98, although all other programs I'd downloaded installed OK!
BTW, so far I'm very pleased with 2000 - big improvement. :)

Lucky you - It's my Win2000 computer that won't install Netscape...
