I too was an early user of Delrina Winfax.
Until V9 came out.
It all started a few years ago. I installed Winfax Pro on a small network, to show the boss how good the software was, and to reap the rewards of being forward thinking etc etc.
We were running Windows 98. Nothing special about the network/server.
The first problem occurred within 5 minutes of everyone saying how good it was to be able to get faxes on any PC. One of the client systems locked up, and had to be rebooted. A process of trial and error soon showed that the client PC was fine if Winfax wasn't running. When it was, as soon as anyone used the network to get a document from the server (eg an MS Word doc), the PC would lock up.
The boss was not impressed. Neither was I. Symantec tech support couldn't help. Naturally we all thought it was Winfax. In the end we reverted back to the old fax machine.
Last year I moved to a new job and Winfax was already there, but no network. Sucker for punishment, I installed a basic network, got Winfax into the client/host setup again, hoping that this version of Winfax had had the problem addressed. But, alas, no. PC locked up again.
I rang Symantec and asked, if I installed version 10 of Winfax, would the problem go away. I got put through to the big enchilada (having refused to put the phone down until I got an answer!!!) and was told that it was Windows' fault, and the fix lay in a module called DCOM98 v1.3.
Dubiously, I got into their download site and downloaded the module. Well, well, well.........the sucker worked. The lockup problem disappeared, and I rang up a few businesses who had had the same problem to tell them the good news.
Question........why don't Symantec tell anyone about DCOM98?? Would they get a nasty letter from Bill G. ?
