View Full Version : how to move a large file from Mac to PC

Our church's Preschool department had a loaned Mac with a big .pdf file on it (3.5MB).[nbsp][nbsp]They need this file in the next week or two.[nbsp][nbsp]In converting to a PC, all the files but this big'n were copied to disks and converted (thank you Conversions Plus!); then the Mac was returned to the owners.

Now we're at a disadvantage, but we *must* get this moosey file on the PC to save staff time re-entering all the pages in this document.

The one time I peeked at it, I thought I remembered seeing two USB-lookalike jacks in the back, but I thought Macs used Firewire.[nbsp][nbsp]Apparently it has no modem in it so we can't just email the file to ourselves.[nbsp][nbsp]The Mac's owners are not too aware of the capabilities of their Mac other than the few programs they use on it, so we've been unable to even find out what model it is.

Before going through the trouble and inconvenience of physically getting our hands on the Mac again, do you have any suggestions how to do this--something we can talk them through over the phone?[nbsp][nbsp]Is there any way to span a copy onto multiple disks, or is there any way to using Stuffit to span disks (ie, does it work like PKZIP or WinZip and span disks)?

Thanks for your help!

I'm currently running an old PowerMac desktop, a Powerbook (laptop), and a Dell desktop.[nbsp][nbsp]I've had to toss files around a few times between them, but it's been a while so please take what I say with a grain of salt.

There are a few things to look for:
1) Are zip drives an option?[nbsp][nbsp]PC formated Zips WILL work in a Mac zip, the same way you can put a pc floppy disk into a Mac.[nbsp][nbsp]That would be the easiest way by far.

2) Is ethernet an option?[nbsp][nbsp]Even without a hub, it may be possible to just use a crossover cable.[nbsp][nbsp]I'd suggest looking through the help section of www.apple.com (http://www.apple.com) for more information into this venue.

3) While Mac has had support for FireWire since '97/98, it's only recently that they've actually started to add FireWire ports to their machines.[nbsp][nbsp]Any Mac that has FireWire I can guarranty you has USB as well, as Apple started going with the "standard" of USB quite a while ago.

re: StuffIt, I admit I'm using an old shareware version, but I do not believe it currently allows for multiple disk images.[nbsp][nbsp]Someone, feel free to correct me on this. :)

Hope I've been of some help.

Be well,

Stuffit does support MultiVolume/Segmenting, at least on my Windows version (5.5), so that should also be possible on the Mac.

Nabil:There are a few things to look for:
1) Are zip drives an option?....
2) Is ethernet an option?....That's why I mentioned this is a tougher-than-usual task as we can't easily get our hands on it to see.[nbsp][nbsp]And with them not being very computer-literate, we cannot even determine what model it is or what connectivity it has.

Arthur: Stuffit does support MultiVolume/Segmenting, at least on my Windows version (5.5)...Hey--some light at the end of the tunnel![nbsp][nbsp]I checked the Aladdin website but it's shy on technical details for the trial downloads.[nbsp][nbsp]I can hope that the Mac version does this too, and may have to call them to get the facts.

Thanks to you both for your help![nbsp][nbsp]I feel like I need a carbon-arc searchlight to light the darkness.[nbsp][nbsp]VERY frustrating.

StuffIt works ok on the PC, but I would recommend uninstalling it once you get things transferred over (hopefully, smoothly).[nbsp][nbsp]In 100% of the experiences I am familiar with (2 whole people on 2 different computers :) ), it has been known to produce significant system instability over time and symptoms similar to hard drive failure, be it Win 98 or Win 2000.
