I have Netscape 4.5 and I use the mail on it. When I first boot up my Netscape and then my mail, the mail window loads with the NetCenter page where the body of the email normally is. Is there any way I can turn this off or change it? I have looked, but can't find anywhere to make the change.

Thanks!

hey Babs....

I temporarily had that particular version, until send mail started crashing me and sending me to the blue screen of meanness...

but to answer your question, I couldn't turn it off, but what I did do, is take the middle bar and move it all the way down to the bottom of the browser window, and just double clicked on the recieved mail to view it. It was the only way I knew how to avoid that annoying page from loading.

Thanks hearts. I have read here about people having problems with this version. I have never had any - strange. This doesn't bother me so much to look at it as it does that it has to load first before you get your mail. I guess I am just too impatient! Thanks for your suggestion.

Okay, I know this thread is pretty old now (well, 3 months almost). Anyway, I finally found the answer. (then it took me a few minutes to track down this thread, cause I couldn't remember the subject)

1: Shut down your browser completely (it must not be running when you do this!).

2: Open up C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\[your profile]\prefs.js in your favorite text editor (like notepad, ultraedit, arachnophilia) (on my box I put del instead of [your profile])

3: Scroll down to the very bottom of this file and add the following line, make sure (!) that you hit the [Enter] key after typing this line in;

user_pref("mailnews.start_page.enabled", false);

4: Save the file, close your editor, and re-fire your browser. Check your mail. The netcenter page should not load at all now :)

Or, you could do the following as well. Follow steps 1 and 2 as above, and step three almost all the way through. Instead of adding that line at the bottom of the page, add this one instead (again, make sure to hit [Enter] after the line)

user_pref("mailnews.start_page.url", "http://www.futurequest.net/");

Then continue with Step 4. When you check your mail, FutureQuest will show up in the bottom frame. Now, if you prefer to see FQuest in a real browser window, you could put in a different URL instead. Just make absolutely sure there are quotes around it and it's spelled correctly :)

I just wanted to refresh this old thread, now that lots of folks are giving NS 6 a try . . . (although I'll have egg on my face if NS isn't using this scheme, I haven't actually sat through the DL yet, LOL)

I wanted to add, I've found it EXTREMELY useful for kiddos . . . some of the headlines and pics NS chooses to send on that mailnews function are REALLY not appropriate viewing for kidlets . . .[nbsp]

I have Netscape 4.7, and I found that if I click on any of my old message subject lines, that Netcenter box doesn't have a chance to show up.[nbsp][nbsp]Do you think editing the profile will work on this version?

Best always,

Joi~
