View Full Version : Adding a larger drive to the iMac

Well, I went ahead and did it. I broke down and installed a larger hard drive in my iMac, in preparation for a Linux install. I gave Mac OS 10 gigs, Linux 5, and 1/1 partitions for testing :)

The drive is a Maxtor Diamondmax 4120 17.2 gig 5400 RPM drive, and aside from a real crash-laden first day (so often that I almost yanked out the drive and put the old one back in), it's settled down and is treating me well.

I think it just needed to get settled in.

Warning about replacing the internal drive. IT'S A B*TCH! You literally take apart the entire computer, save the monitor casing. I had the motherboard here, the daughterboard there, cables all over the place, and I STILL have some extra screws left over, not to mention a sliced finger. (I gave this computer my blood, sweat and tears, it ought to work ;)

But I'm happy.... it works even though Maxtor conveniently has a sticker on the front of the box that says "Requires Windows 95" Bah ;)

And I've got a lot of room to grow.

Requires Windows 95
I think they are refering to the fact that it's difficult to make a larger drive run under 3.1 or older versions of DOS... I think :)

That's what the documentation says.. even in Win95 you need to install some special software to use more than 8 gigs. Weird :)

It's really performing great now that I've got all the bugs worked out.. Still won't boot an alpha of the next rev of the Mac OS (I get developer seeds of it :) but I think that's a case of the driver and the OS not liking each other more than the drive itself.

Well, time to sleep.

Both of the SIX servers got the same from me as well...[nbsp][nbsp]SIX #1 never co-operated, SIX #2 got much more blood (plus a good swift kick) and seems to be behaving now...

I was disconnecting power cables from the hard drives (moving drives) and the sudden release of the cable sent flesh tearing across high-grade aluminum case flashing causing profuse bleeding from severed arteries...[nbsp][nbsp]It was not pretty... :D
