I installed win 98 almost a year ago (has it been out that long?) At that time I did not install any new fonts from 3rd party cd's. You know the ones, 15,682 fonts for $14.99.

I never took the time to research the effect on win 98 of installing 48 budzillion fonts. I didn't want to take the chance of the fonts having the same effect as on previous versions of windows ( I could walk from here to Jeruselem before windows finished loading) like I said, I have never stuck my nose in a win 98 manual or help screen.

During the time that I have been running win 98, several (read: many) applications have installed fonts on the system...Corel, Lotus Smartsuite etc...

I use QuarterDeck Cleansweep Extra Strength and Real Help to 'service' the entire system and clean the registry. My guess is that it should not be a problem installing lots more fonts.

I have to feed this computer a motherboard and a 56k modem about every 5-6 months, but other than that, the speed is fine.

Question: Does the quantity of fonts installed have any negative effect on the operation of windows?
I am running a mmx 233 overclocked to near 300 (that's all the motherboard can handle), 128 meg of ram. I am using FAT32 on 2 partitions set at 2k and 4k cluster size.

Yes you can have too many fonts. I suggest creating a font backup folder with all of those extra fonts you never use, to help with loading time. I never install new fonts, but that's me.

If and when you need one of those extra fonts, you can just drag it back to the fonts folder and install it again. That's what I'd do - I think just having them installed takes up a lot of ram, but I'm not sure.
