Lat night installed Win 98 - and after fixing all the file screw ups it caused and such I converted to FAT32 -
ready for this . . .
I started with about 180 megs left on the HD
(oh I was panicd to see Win98 like ate up all my space!)
ended up with about 700 meg free woohoo! loving it!
/me breathes a sigh of relief.
the crappy part was that the instiallation screwed up some settings and I had to reinstall some of the small programs - spent all night using good ol nuts and bolts (which I just purchased for real soince my demo was due to kick the bucket in 2 days - it's 50% off if ya buy online woohoo!)to fix stuff.
hmmm not sure if this is any better than win 95 but the increased drive space kicks butt http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif
guess I have time to save up for that new HD now
I definately recommend trying out FAT32 if ya need to free up space - this ust bought me a lot of time!

Ok, I'm ticked. I just typed a VERY long winded response here, and I must have misspelled my username, and when I hit back, it was all gone. I'm mad now.
I'll try to remember what I said. This time I'm copying it to the clipboard Just-in case (that's my name, don't wear it out http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif )
I like FAT32 as well. On any drive over 1G, all files, no matter the size, take up space in increments of 32K. This means that all of your shortcuts, typically using 20-30 bytes, are taking up 32K. With FAT32, that "Cluster size" is reduced to 4K. This will free up lots of space, even though the FAT table itself takes up a lot more space (it now has to allocate a larger number of clusters). The end result was 400+ megs more space on my little 1.2G. That's 33% more space! I must have a lot of relatively small files.
I like 98 for it's DirectX support (being a multimedia programmer, this is important), and it's better memory management, etc. I hate the web page looking crap, and when I installed, I disabled all of it. Only thing different is the toolbar, which I could not live without.
If you want some serious optimization, go to your 98 CD and look in:
(cd drive):\TOOLS\RESKIT\POWERTOY
or something like that, and look for TweakUI.
Right click on TWEAKUI.INF and select "Install". This lets you change settings (safely) that you would otherwize need to mess with the registry. Mostly goofy stuff, but there's some handy things, too.
There's a TweakUI for 95, also, but it's not on the 95 CD. It's at you-know-who's web site.
Ok, done rambling now. Lets hope that it takes my username this time...

You know it's bad tho when you already have Fat32 and you've still only got 160mb left... :-( I'd put in a bigger HDD, but I'm really hoping to be able to replace this box within the month.

To disable the web junk, go into explorer (actually, any window will do, control panel, my computer, etc. - they're all explorer) and click View and Folder Options. Now click on Classic Style and that will disable most of the web stuff.
With the start thing, you mean the slow animated thing? That's what TweakUI is for. In there you can turn off the menu animation and you can change the menu delay, so that as soon as the mouse is over an item, it pops out with no delay. I used to do that manually in the registry. I still have to change a lot of reg entries to fully customize my system, which is why I dread ever having to reinstall.
Actually, it's been about 6 months since I had to reinstall, and that time was because of a virus. I have my system about as stable as it gets (I run it 18 - 20 hours a day programming, surfing, playing Quake, etc.). I just had to learn the registry inside out, so I can now pinpoint any problem on my computer when windows decides to get wierd.
I am FAT32 as well, and on C: I have 330 MB free and D: has 105. That stinks. I refuse to delete my mp3's. I can't, because I write audio software http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif
I am saving up for a new and bigger and faster drive. C: is a 1.2 gig and D: is a 400 Meg - both Seagate. I want a Maxtor drive, like a 6.4 at least.
(D: is not FAT32 - not big enough)
I have a 40 meg drive for sale if you need it http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif It's a Conner that came with my Packard Bell Legend 386sx from 1992! I don't think you can put 98 on there, or if you can, no FAT32 on the Conner http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif
Ok, I'm done being silly.

Two things, first, get a program called Partition Magic. FAT32 sizes the partition to the biggest FAT32 size (usually) and this program will let you make it even smaller (like 4k or so).
Del, if you want (and are willing to pay the shipping), I have some small HD's that you can have (450-510 MB Conner's and maybe a WD or two).
We upgrade PC's all the time and at one time I had like 10 of them and gave/threw most of them away. There great in a small 486 to setup another OS to learn. I setup a small network at home using 3 of them in an old 486 machine. Just let me know.
Also, if anyone wants a gutted Gateway, let me know, we're throwing them away as well (486 DX2-66) (provided I can get them).

Hey Mike.
We're gonna be able to buy a new HDD this week, prolly going to go with a 2.1gb or so I think. It's gonna be a trick getting the new HDD in this old 386 along with a cdrom, let alone trying a few drives *g* Thanks anyway though.
How gutted of a Gateway? Completely, or does it still have the motherboard and chip? I might be interested if it's not too far gone.

The Gateway has the following (typically):
CD-ROM Drive
Motherboard with all items (chip included)
Sound Card (SB16 I think)
3COM 10BT Nic
Some may have a combination of:
Floppy
HD
Memory
According to a co-worker, he saw about 20 of them in the dumpster (and got some nic's, sound card's and CD-ROM's)

Mike,
Gimme a price. If it's low enough, I'll take two, maybe three.
