I love Dotster![nbsp][nbsp]Thanx for switching FQ :).

I have a question -- what would happen if I renewed a domain name that didn't point to anything anymore?[nbsp][nbsp]Do I have to technically "park" it somewhere, or would it just sit in cyberspace, not able to be accessed via a browser...and just show me as the owner?

I've reached the limit on my IRMs, and there are so many other domains I want but cannot do anything with at the moment.

Thanx!

If they are pointing to the FutureQuest nameservers, without a package, they will just not be accesible from anywhere..but will be registered and show as such within a whois....

Thanx Deb -- would you recommend doing this or actually parking the domain?

hi joi,

don't forget that dotster offers url forwarding either:

free, masked (you get their ad at the top of the page, and it shows "secondary.com" domain in the location window)

or

$5 yearly, unmasked (without the ad and the url will take you to the "real named" url without anyone noticing. secondary.com --> primary.com (and shows primary.com in the location window)

the domains have to reside on dotster, in order to use this service.

cheers,

when you go to dotster, and log into your account, selection the domain and then check out the "url forwarding" option info. you can choose the options i've outlined above.

you don't need any kind of .shtml. just a basic domain name or address to a specific page. (either free with an ad, or $5 yearly without an ad).

i use the $5 yearly unmasked. for example, check out the websites:

--> the real domain: http://lincoakpark.com
--> the masked domain (for those who may misspell - did i spell that right?): http://linkoakpark.com

i don't have the specific dotster page, but you'll find it in that whole long list when you begin working with your domains.

hope this helps. :)

Urk![nbsp][nbsp]From today's CNET Web Building Dispatch:

"A lawsuit waiting to happen March 15, 2001 Vol. 3, No. 3
www.cnet.com/webbuilding/0-3880-8-5111793-1.html (http://www.cnet.com/webbuilding/0-3880-8-5111793-1.html)

If you own a domain but haven't built a Web page for it yet, your URL may lead to someone else's advertisement. Builder reader Richard Florkes bought his domain, sugab.com, five years ago and left it parked at Network Solutions. Recently he pointed at the URL with his browser and found a large advertisement for Verio's domain-name registration services. A small notice mentioned that Verio did not own that domain.

Florkes has put up his own site since then, but Verio's advertising could easily have led to a lawsuit. The owner of the domain should have a right to collect fees for carrying Verio's advertising. According to Verio spokesperson Mona Peloquin, the company puts a placeholder on any Verio-registered domain name where the owner hasn't yet built a site. Verio considers this a service to the domain owner because, Peloquin says, "Domain name registrants are required to have an active Web site associated with the designated IP address within six weeks of registration." The "active Web site" requirement may be Verio policy, but ICANN doesn't seem to follow it. Of course, Florkes bought his domain before you had to provide a host, and the rules should be grandfathered for your registration date.

None of this addresses the essential mystery here, that Florkes' domain is registered at Network Solutions, not Verio. Did Verio hijack the domain from the Network Solutions database, or is there a deal between Verio and Network Solutions to host inactive domains? Either way, if you own any domains that you aren't using, you might want to check to see if Verio's running advertising at your expense."

Sheesh...

So Julie, are you saying that the domains all have to be registered with Dotster in order for them to forward them to another URL?[nbsp][nbsp]My domains are all registered with them -- so could I point a new domain to a current URL -- for ie: domain.com/filename.shtml ??

Julie thanx![nbsp][nbsp]I just purchased the same URL forwarding on one of my IRMs.[nbsp][nbsp]

Hey, does this mean that my account is open to accept another IRM, since this one in particular is now hosted on Dotster's servers??

Thanx much,

Joi~
