Wired has an interesting article on the 'scam' of pre-registration of the new TLDs http://www.wired.com/news/politics/0,1283,41609,00.html

Here are a couple of interesting snippets:

Although the details of the registration process are still being ironed out with ICANN, the companies that will run the new TLD registries aren't planning to honor the pre-reservations. Instead, when registration begins, they'll accept bids from the various ICANN-accredited registrars on a randomized round-robin basis.

Afilias, the company that will run the dot-info registry, plans to register new domains using a queuing process.

In the first round of open registration, each registrar will send Afilias a set number of domain-name requests -- say, 10,000 -- and Afilias will process those requests in random order. In the second round, the same process will be repeated, except the registrar will line up in a different order.
Some skeptics say the scam extends beyond the registration period.

"These aren't going to be popular extensions," said Kevin Sullivan, director of development at It'sYourDomain.com, a registrar for the original dot-com, dot-org and dot-net TLDs. "You have to ask yourself: When's the last time you went to a website that didn't have a dot-com extension? The answer, most likely, is that you haven't recently, or maybe you went to a dot-net."

"The registrar community is defeating itself by pushing the financial incentive with the new TLDs," Sullivan said. "Once registration begins, they're going to push the price up so much that only speculators can afford them -- and who are they going to sell to?"
I wonder how much Joker is planning on charging for the .info TLDs?
