When I see this in a whois search, it is clear the last registration is more than 2 years old, but is it?
>>>Record last updated on 19-Apr-1997<<<
I know it is possible to register for more than 2 years now, but was it possible back then?
How do I find out if that name is available, when the whois querry says it is not?
Thanks
Hi...
The registry database may infact be correct that the name is still in use. Yes I remember back then you were able to register names for 2 years or more.
At times when names expire, the registrar (being NSI in 1997) will let the name sit for a couple months to give the owner ample time to pay the renewal for the name, so the name may be unavailable.
If the name was infact free there would be no record found for that name. :) sorry...
If the name is renewed, the "record created" date does not change from the 1997 date to now. The record created date will be there as long as the current owner has that name.
[I know how you feel...there is a domain name similar to mine in which I am feenin' for. The owner completely abandoned it. I don't know what happened to him. He hasn't done anything to his site since Dec 1998, and when his domain expires later this year, I plan to snatch it up ;)[nbsp][nbsp]no doubt ;)[nbsp][nbsp]....gimme gimme gimme!! ]
You can however do a more detailed search into the matter. Although there are ways to take over a domain name if you really wanted it, but that's wrong. :( wrong :( wrong :(
Good luck

Thanks for the reply JE.

I agree, it is wrong, kind of like taking over some old poor persons house for back taxes when the govt. makes the taxes to high for them to pay. Oh well, that is another story.
How about that detailed search? How does one go about that?
One thing you could try is to contact the person who owns the name and find out from them if they plan to keep the name...(a speedy process) If they plan not to, then you could ask them to sign it over to you..that's not likely..hahahahahahah :)So it was created in 1997..guessing in 1999 it was renewed, you could wait unitl 2001 if it's not that urgent..if you must have it, i'd take it if the owner no longer wanted it. But I won't get into how to do that.hahahahahah no don't do that..you know what I do-try to create an exact similar name like it like if I wanted thissite.com, and it's taken, I would go for thissitei.com

Hi,
The "Record Last updated on" is not an accurate source of information about payment for the domain. I have a few domains that show an earlier date.
One way to see if any payment is pending is to go to the payment page of NSI and type in the domain name. You will get billing details if a payment is pending ;)

Hey pridetech,
That is what I was looking for. Thanks :)

What/where exactly is the payment page?[nbsp][nbsp]Do you mean the step where you pay when registering a domain, or do they have a different payment page for re-registering?[nbsp][nbsp]I can't seem to find anything related to the latter.
So it was created in 1997..guessing in 1999 it was renewed, you could wait unitl 2001 Aren't NSI re-registrations all for one year?[nbsp][nbsp]I haven't had a domain long enough with them to know first hand...

pridetech and JE plus anyone else that would like to place some input here,
OK, I have found that some of the names I am looking at, the owner is behind in payment. Can you go ahead and grab that name? If so, how?...just like you would if you are registering a name for the first time?
I think the more important question for me anyway is this...
Is that the right thing to do? Should you notify the owner that he or she is not current, or grab it, if possible. This has me kind of tied up.
Thanks

pridetech,
Thanks for the link![nbsp][nbsp]Unless I've gone blind, they don't have it in their site map.
I should clarify the last thing I said about NSI re-registrations:[nbsp][nbsp]I meant up until recently, I believe they were only for one year.[nbsp][nbsp]They now allow them for up to 10 years.

Dan,
You can reach the payments link from the home page (bottom left > 'New and Renewal Payments')
AuctionMan,
You have to wait till NSI drops the domain. You cannot go ahead and register just because the owner has not paid up. Most of the time NSI waits 2-3 months before deactivating an unpaid domain.
Notifying the owner depends on how bad you want the domain. I once got a email from a previous owner (who forgot to pay)within 2 days of registering a domain . He wanted to buy it back from me. I refused. I did not know that it was a deactivated domain. Even if I had known I would have grabbed it anyway.

I agree
You should just wait until NSI drops the domain from their system. If an owner is behind in a payment, chances are that the domain is almost ready to be dropped for non payment. Keep an eye on the domain so that when it is dropped, you can snatch it up.
