Hello all,

Have you heard in the news or in advertisements about the .cc domain? The are heavily promoting it here in Orlando... I am wondering how well it will do? Or if they are going to just flood the market with domains?

More info is at www.spot.cc (http://www.spot.cc)

Any thoughts?

I think that this and future variations of .com will only lead to more confusion for the everyday joe computer user.

Mike

Unless you can think of a really cool _must have_
domain name that needs *.cc like "www.go.to (http://www.go.to)" did
with the *.to domain, or if you have the bucks to
spend and want to grab every available top-level of
your dotcom name, I wouldn't bother with it.

My reason is that when people see foobar.com, .net, or
.org they think "website".[nbsp][nbsp]When I see foobar.cc I think
"Is it a file in the C language? Is it a Lotus ccMail file of some sort? huh?"

Hi Mike,

Well, here's an eye opener.

I just visited the .cc people to see what they we're all about. Checked my domain in .cc and found it was taken....by ME!

Someone somehow registered my domain with a .cc under my name.[nbsp][nbsp]I didnt do it, I was not even aware of this .cc till today.

I have to check my billing/credit card statements to see if I was charged for this.

An e-mail in regard to this has been sent.

Spooky.

*UPDATE*

I have found another .cc name mysteriously registered under my name and NOT by me.

NEVER ORDERED .cc's:
modbod.cc
tsunamis.cc

Registered under Garrabrant Studios, Inc.

I think what they might have done is search the whois database, look for a certain type of registrant, (Inc., LLC, whatever), set up an account, THEN, send a bill with no obligation.

I never received a bill for these, and the record created date was around 1/11/99.

This is all an assumption.

I don't dig this type of strong arm sales.

btw, so far no reply to my e-mail.

Interesting that they redirected to your URL. Is it because they used the FQ name servers?

I remember a few months back I received a letter in the mail from a company that wanted me to buy the .cc to my domain, and that it was temporarily working under myparentime.cc - I checked it out, & it was...but I didn't buy ;) .

Maybe it's my skeptical nature...

They say on their site:

Companies like Nike, Coke, Goodyear and Intel have already registered many .CC domains -- now it's your turn.

Thanks to Scott's post we know that someone is registering companies with a *.cc without the knowlege of the company.

Now is it just me, or do others think that maybe these "big name" companies have never heard of the *.cc domain?[nbsp][nbsp]I can't be sure, but this has my internal BS detection alarm going off.

They did the same to me. Only I saw the email(could dig it up if anyone wants). It was a forwarding promotion thing to get me to buy the .cc domain.
Sort of a "Look at what we did to your domain, an't that cool? But gotta pay if you want to keep it."[nbsp][nbsp]

I think they wanted a lot of bucks too.

I received the same email and postal mail a while back for *every one* of my domains![nbsp][nbsp]They are promoting the .cc tld very hard right now.[nbsp][nbsp]Heh even our local radio station is now bragging about their new .cc domain and promoting the *** out of it.[nbsp][nbsp]Gee, I wonder how much they're making for that one?[nbsp][nbsp]At the same time... because this company seems to be spending so much on promoting the .cc domain it may turn out to be a viable option when the .com/.net/.org TLDs are taken and you really really want "this particular" domain name.[nbsp][nbsp]If the .cc does catch-on it'll offer yet another tld to ease the searching a bit...[nbsp][nbsp]who knows...

I was wondering where this thread went to..... :)

It would be nice if some of the new gTLD's we're released at the up n coming Cairo meeting.

BTW, still no reply from spot.cc
