Just a couple of things to jot down in your memory bank where domains are concerned....

1. NetworkSolutions has officially announced (again) that the pre-pay plan for NEW Domain Name Registrations will go into affect on September 18th 1999.[nbsp][nbsp]If you need to acquire a domain name before the credit card only payments are required *now* is the time to do it.

2. The WHOIS Look-ups across the internet are not all working correctly.[nbsp][nbsp]You can not currently depend on the results of an enormous amount of them.[nbsp][nbsp]*Many* *many* hosts, and other services have *NOT* updated their WHOIS Lookups to reflect all of these changes.[nbsp][nbsp]As such an enormous amount of them will deliver conflicting results.[nbsp][nbsp]Quite a few of them are only showing domains registered via NetworkSolutions and are not reflecting registrations elsewhere.[nbsp][nbsp]For this reason, if you need to do a domain name lookup please try to use the lookups that are actually using the shared registry and not simply NetworkSolutions.[nbsp][nbsp]It can be confusing trying to understand it all but the simplistics of it is that you should use either the FutureQuest Domain Wizard located at http://www.FutureQuest.net/cgi-bin/domain/wizard.pl or the Shared Registry WHOIS lookup at http://www.nsiregistry.com/[nbsp][nbsp]Two others that seem to be current are http://www.DomainWatch.com and http://www.whois.corenic.net/cgi-bin/whois.cgi[nbsp][nbsp]When in doubt, check with all of these to compare notes ;)

i notice the wizard claims to use whois.crsnic.net as the lookup host. but when i try to go directly to the site i get 'no response' (although the wizard seems to make requests OK).

my question: what/where is whois.crsnic.net?

If you were to telnet into your account and type the following:

$whois yourdomain.tld@whois.crsnic.net

It uses the whois protocol to connect to a special port.[nbsp][nbsp]crsnic is the core whois server operated by core...
