Here is the article I stumbled on, and please don't ask me how i got there, i always find these things by accident and then bookmark them ;)

http://www.internetnews.com/bus-news/article/0,1087,3_181351,00.html

In my ignorance, I follow this happy trail .. :) :) :) .. and get confused cuz they use different lingo and different numbers. :o

SO.. I haul Deb from whatever it was she was doing and start panicing about all this. WHAT DO I DO? I think I started confusing her just a bit cuz she wanted to see the url of how I got her CORE NUMBER.. btw their site said it was COCO-7242

now i am jealous.. they got a core number and I don't. HOW COME? I am soooooooooo confused.

BEFORE I DO ANYTHING.. i thought i would write my concerns and worries here and if ya's have anything to contribute on this .. PLEASE do! :)

this company that I am looking at is this:
https://joker.com/domain/index.html?lang=EN -- cuz this is part of the path.

NOW.. $43 and change seems very enticining, BUT.. this is confusing. There is a core handle rather than a NIC handle. Do these do the same thing? Are they accepted in the data base with internic? what does all this dividing mean?

WHO IS THE HOMEBASE? IS ICANN?

Is the contract between you and these new people -- new company? What if their business goes away.. goes bankrupt... no longer exists in let's say six months.. what happens with your domain then?

WHO IS IT REALLY safe to order your domain from?

This company listed above, they are resellers for this group of folks... http://www.corenic.org/

and quoting DEB
There are many many things still being worked on...[nbsp][nbsp]everyone ultimately has to get the name and servers into the Internic database.. that's the final destination.. it used to only be NetSol who could do this.. but now many companies can accomplish the task.. the key is HOW they do it... and How MUCH they charge for it.. and How LONG it takes them to do it .. and How ACCURATELY they do it.. etc etc

Sorry for losing track of myself.. I had to trace my steps in my history of my browser and got a bit sidetracked reading other things! ;)

Thanks!

I registered my domain with joker.com this afternoon at 1pm Pacific Daylight Time.

It is 10:45 pm PDT and my domain is active.

Woo-hoo!

If you have any questions about the registration process, I will try to answer them.

I'm signing up for a few right now myself.... any idea how reliable these people are anyways?

Well, I'm afraid I have no way of knowing &quot;how reliable they are&quot;, but I decided to take a chance. I figured that the companies belonging to CORE must have had to meet <font color=#FF0000>some</font> kind of standards. And, having lived in Germany for a year, and knowing what sticklers for precision and detail they are, I figured it'd be OK.

But I certainly can't guarantee them for anyone.

So, when you sign up for a domain name with one of these new registrars, how does FQuest deal with it.[nbsp][nbsp]It seems to me that FQuest's ordering system is set up to deal exclusively with NSI.

I agree that the pages at FQ are a little confusing.

Here's what I did. First I ordered my domain from joker.com. After that, I logged onto FQuest and ordered one of their packages. There is place where it looks like they want you to fill in the contact info for your domain, and I guess that is in case they would be handling it for you. I just filled that stuff in anyway. After that, they send you an e-mail. In my response to the e-mail I just made a short remark that I had ordered my domain from CSL BmbH at joker.com. I don't know if that remark was necessary or not.

If you plan to host the site on the FutureQuest Servers I recommend you go ahead and register the domain name using our Name Servers (http://Register.FutureQuest.net) this prevents us from having to do anything as far as the domain name goes making it so we need only set up the account.[nbsp][nbsp]If you do not use our name servers and then order the account with us you will have to use the registrar to transfer/update the name servers to ours for it to work.[nbsp][nbsp]Depending on the registrar this process is different and will in fact be up to the domain name owner to accomplish unless it is with a registrar that A. Allows us to make changes, B. that we are familiar working with, and C. the site owner provides us with the appropriate information to do so.[nbsp][nbsp]For Example: Register.com requires a username and password.. we would not have access to this info unless the site owner gives it to us.[nbsp][nbsp]The result is, it becomes the site owner's responsibility to make those changes.

We are currently, still utilizing NetSol for one reason only.[nbsp][nbsp]The reason being that they are currently still allowing us to apply for the registration and then billing the site owner accordingly.[nbsp][nbsp]Very Soon this option will no longer be available and the site owner will need to pay before registration happens.[nbsp][nbsp]At this point the order process will change :(

I am still confused on the joker.com thing also. There are two domains that I want to register for future use (like 2 years away) So basically these would be parked domains.

Are you saying, Deb, to only use register.com and not the cheaper priced joker.com? Sorry to be ignorant here but this is confusing to me.

I would like to use joker.com because of the cheaper pricing, but I also know you get what you pay for.

*EDIT*
I had just had a duh moment. Do you even need to park a domain anymore if you use one of these alternate services? I'm all around *dazed and confused*![nbsp][nbsp];)

You may use any registrar you like... it's just that with the many different registrars popping up we could not possibly support each of them.[nbsp][nbsp]We offer Register.com as a register that is already setup to work with FutureQuest.[nbsp][nbsp]So for those that would like use of Domain Manager, a registrar that's established, and do not want to have to 'know the details' of things like name servers then http://FutureQuest.Register.com will work great :)

For those are comfortable registering their own names and want to explore the many other options out there, by all means feel free to do so :)[nbsp][nbsp]The only thing different is with Register.com we can provide detailed tutorials, but wont be able to for all of the others..
