External & Internal Redirect, & Internal Overlay?

I already have a good explanation of Internal Redirection from Deb in an e-mail from several months ago.[nbsp][nbsp]What I want to understand is External Redirection and Internal Overlay.

My question:
Is there a place on the internet where I can get information on how these work and how they differ from each other?

External Redirect in action:
http://sapphire.solareclipse.net/ is http://24.66.167.153/
That is being directed to a cable modem, an external source.

Intenal Overlay in action:
http://utopia.solareclipse.net/ is a copy of http://solareclipse.net/utopia/
In this case, the subdomain is acting as an overlay of an internal source.
