A couple questions on UBB...

First, is it possible to have it set up so only authorized people can post messages, but anyone can read them?

Second, from reading the install help I'm assuming we all have to buy our own license of UBB?[nbsp][nbsp]Not one of those things that just comes with the service it looks like.

Thanks!

1) Yes, at least in the license version you can. Not sure on the scaled down free version since I only use a licensed copy.

2) As I recall there is a free version which of course is feature limited from what I understand.[nbsp][nbsp]You can either use the free version, lease the license (my personal recommendation) or out right buy a one year license. Leasing is cheaper in the short run.[nbsp][nbsp]Haven't read over the current prices and leasing/buying arrangements so am not to sure how things stand now, so I won't open my big mouth right now.

Hope that helps a bit

Thanks for the information!

It's currently $67 a year lease or $152 outright purchase with one year of free upgrades.[nbsp][nbsp]So to constantly stay up to date the lease is probably the way to go.

JoeRT, it's a tricky decision.[nbsp][nbsp]If you like a particular version of UBB, a one-time purchase gives you unlimited use, whereas the lease is for one year only.[nbsp][nbsp]If you buy a license and renew it yearly to keep getting free updates, they're about the same at 3 yrs and after that buying/renewing is cheaper.

My advice is that if you don't know how the concept of your BB will fare, lease for one year and see how it goes; if it flops, you've only ~40% of the cost of a license invested.[nbsp][nbsp]If it takes off, then buy a license.[nbsp][nbsp]If you like the version you buy, you don't have to renew the support if you don't want to.

Oh, I have one UBB (looks nice "out of the box" but am tired of the flakey upgrades) and one Discus (church website; kinda plain but dependable).[nbsp][nbsp]Discus is heavier on CPU resources as it's cgi-driven.

Good luck!

Hmm... when I got my license back in January it was $75 for lease and $125 for buying.[nbsp][nbsp]Renewal of lease at that time was $25 I think, not sure on current.[nbsp][nbsp]Amazing how things change.

I agree with Frank on the leasing first unless you heavily use messageboards now.[nbsp][nbsp]But some users have been known to be a bit initially put off by the new setup at least in my case, now they love it. Go figure.

And let's not get into that CPU usage thing, since I believe there's a debate elsewhere on that.
