Hey Justin...

I have something for ya..

You are always bored and always with an opinion.. http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif

I was reading in a magazine about a DOS-Based browser. I know how you like to download things and try them out so I thought I would share it with ya.

They say you can download it on a 1.44MB Diskette. There is a lot I could tell ya about it, but they might shut this thread down on me for posting the entire article! http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif

here is the URL if you are interested.
http://home.arachne.cz/

Arachne was designed by xChaos software. It supports subset of HTML/4.0
specification, including tables, frames, imagemaps, forms, and more. FTP and e-mail
clients are incorporated.

let me know what ya think of it if ya try it?

Hehe - that's funny. I was just going to look for a DOS version of Apache for my laptop. I want to run that as my web server since I can't get Windows 3.1 to work on it (very old Compaq laptop 486 SX-33). I figured it would be nice to just leave on all the time and run as my personal web server.

So a DOS browser would make a nice addition to that, wouldn't ya say? I was thinking about Linx, but I'll give them both a try http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif Netscape 3.0 works good on it when Windows decides to work, but the second you let it go into standby mode (leave it alone for 2 minutes) Windows won't work any more until you take out the battery and give it a full restart. And I can't find the drivers for the thing either.

That's cool. I'll go check it out now and bring back a report...

Lets see... I was in the process of typing my review, complete with a ratings system based on smileys, when I though "Hey, why don't I post this using the cute little DOS browser. I then saw a lot of blue...

Needless to say it's very much deleted. But here WAS my review:

Slow. Ungodly slow. Fine on the 233, but unusable on the lil' puter. Netscape 3.0 was a LOT faster on same puter when I had Windows 3.1 actually running. I thought a DOS based browser would necessarily be faster, but not this one (I did notice on the 233, too, but it's not really annoyingly slow).

As for looks, it's not bad - quite impressive for a DOS based program. At 1024 x 768, it's pretty kik butt. But of course, looks aren't everything.

It crashed the lap three times, needing a reboot on the third one. Being a laptop with power management built in, I had to pull the battery and do a full reset. It crashed once on the 233 earlier, but nothing major. Then, of course, a blue screen crash as I was going to post this.

I have to keep in mind that it is made for native DOS and specifically says that it doesn't always work right in 95 or 98. I never actually connected to the modem before, I just viewed local pages. When I tried to let it detect the modem, I probably should've hung up first http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif That's when it crashed.

But anyway, I do want to find a DOS browser that's hopefully faster (and more stable) for the lap. I also need to find a way to get it to talk to a COM port - DOS's Interlink isn't compatible with FAT32, so that's out. I don't have LapLink either.

Actually, I'd like to find a way to just use the 233's modem through the null modem cable - that'd be kewl. Kinda like sharing it. I know how to do that with two 98 machines, or two DOS machines, but 6.22 and 98? Hmm...

Anyway, that was an interesting thing to try out. Back to hunting http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

Oh, and I'm not bored - I just procrastinate a whole lot. There are a hundred million things I should be doing right now (or any other time). Like working on my software or cleaning my room. But I like to play!

Now, this is what it says about it:

DR-Web Spyder is a fast browser and its toolbar buttons let you easily navigate the web. .... it supports tables, forms, image maps, and netscape compatable frames...
