View Full Version : Free FTP program
http://www.ftpx.com/
I havn't tried this one yet (I prefer Windows Commander for all of my FTP and File management) but am downloading it now....
It's called FTPx, available at the link I left above. It's free for personal and non-profit usage. From the screen shots on their site it looks pretty good.
They describe it as "Extremely simple yet powerful" it is meant to look and feel like your windows explorer and as such lesson the learning curve.
Has anyone tried it yet? If so please let me know your experiences with it. If it works ok I'll be requesting permission to add it to the AOTA tools area for download (their site is pretty slow so it may help to have a mirror of it on this end)
At any rate, for those needing a free solution and or a possible simpler solution when dealing with FTP you may want to give this one a shot

ah yes we have - very nice interface - easy to use I likeit - only problems I had is more advanced ftp funcions like moving a file from one directory to another and chmod and stuff you cant do http://www.aota.net/ubb//frown.gif(
and like hey why have to telnet to chmod stuff if you can just upload the file and chmod it right there?
I really like the ws_ftp le freebie cuz it has all those fucntions on it - but onthe one hand the interface isnt as nice as FTPx
but since ftpx doesnt meet my needs anymore I no longer use it -
but f rpeole who just simply upload download and stuff and make new directories it's way kewl

Yeah I agree,
I just played with it a lil bit and though the interface is nice if you are used to using Windows Explorer all of the functionality isn't there.
But! Have no fear http://www.aota.net/ubb//smile.gif For those really wanting to find the best FTP program for them you may want to visit this link http://www.winfiles.com/apps/98/ftp.html there are a BUNCH of freeware and shareware programs to choose from listed.
I will be spending the day looking at many of them and working up another page on AOTA net to offer a few more programs for those who need something other then CuteFTP
Hope this helps

Since the subject is brought up already, check out http://ralimi.hypermart.net . It's called CodeEdit, it's main purpose is to be an HTML editor, but it also allows you to edit files as they live on the remote machine. It's got a built in FTP client, which can be used as standard ftp, or for the aforementioned remote editing.
The other cool part, if you've got M$IE 3+ installed on your system somewhere (which we all do, whether we like it or not) it's got an internal preview function too. Kinda handy sometimes, just click a button to see it, instead of saving/opening browser/searching for filename/figuring out it didn't work as planned.
Okay, done talking now.
Hmmmm there's another I've not tried lol but then again I'm betting there are hundreds like that huh?
I'm loading up the page now and getting ready to check it out... would like to have quite a few options available for everyone for obvious reasons...
I still love my Windows Commander more then anything else... for $35 I not only have FTP but I get to throw away Windows Explorer and Winzip and RAR and a multitude of other programs because I have it all with Windows Commander http://www.aota.net/ubb//smile.gif http://www.ghisler.com/
I'm looking forward to checking out Code Edit... thanks for the tip!

I'm going to download Windows Commander soon. About how much space does it take up when it's all installed? We're running short on HDD real estate, and we've spent too much on other upgrades recently so a second HDD is out for a couple months (we finally upgraded to 64mb RAM, and added a Zip drive! Only took a couple years *s*)
