View Full Version : This is gonna sound like spam...
BUT IT IS NOT!
I am just curious if anyone has had problems listing at Yahoo.
I know I have until I discovered something that may be purely coincidence OR it works.
All I know is.. after no luck getting in, I tried something and less than 36 hours later,
I received an email from Yahoo saying I have been added and will appear in the directory in 2-4 days.
It's not that big of a deal and as I said, this is not spam (just saying that raises suspicion I realize) and I have not found the deep dark secrets of Yahoo or anything, but it made a believer out of me. And I am willing to share (of course) openly but I want to find someone who has been unsuccessful to see if it really works.
An experiment of sorts.
Talk to me.. having problems?

Well give up the secret, dude! http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif
I thought I was in Yahoo until I realized that I'm not - I come up in the "Web page matches" but those are the results of another search engine (some Japanese sounding name) - I'm not actually in their categories...
So fill us in - please? hehe http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

When I submitted my personal site to Yahoo, I didn't get a response. I submitted again about 3 weeks later and got a response the next day.
Initially I submitted to a large group, personal homepages. When I submitted the second time I submitted it to a more specific group and got the quick response.
I'm curious to find out your secret though. I don't think I did anything special.

Hello again..
I WILL share. Please don't expect any miracles but I want to wait until I find someone who feels they are at a point where they cannot get listed.
Then.. conduct the experiment.
Thanks.

Paul
I have listed several sites on Yahoo and have found their response time to vary for a number of reasons, including: work load, who processes your request, etc.
The best tip I can offer for submitting to Yahoo is to follow their instructions EXACTLY. Save a copy of everything you submit to them. Re-submit if you don't hear anything after 4 weeks.
I have also found that my response from them has improved over time. I would almost suspect that they may "know you" from your email address.
Also, if you really want a listing in Yahoo within 7 days, they now offer an express submission service for $199. For more info see:
http://www.positiontips.com/newsletters/mp-0399.htm#ONE
By the way, if you do not currently have a listing in Yahoo, GET ONE. The effort is well worth all the trouble, time, effort, and (perhaps) money. When I listed timezoneconverter.com with them, I was able to get a listing in the top 10 (and mostly in the top 3) for nearly ALL the search terms you can use there. These well placed listings were extremely instrumental in getting this site launched quickly.

Hey, Paul:
I've tried numerous times and not even received a reply- I might be a good candidate for your 'technique.'
I've heard some other people make a similar claim that they found some way of submitting that got them in quickly, but most of those people are out for the bucks :P
Let me know if you want to use me as a guinea pig.

FutureQuest Support
What I've found over time.
Regardless of knowing the Yahoo! Secret Code Word and many other techniques... I've always had the best luck by submitting to only one catagory and making sure it is specific to my site and not already over loaded.
As an example: Getting FutureQuest into the main host listing was futile for us... but going for Ocala Florida Internet Services got us in the directory in less than 24 hours into 3 or 4 listings for Florida. For the FutureQuest site it's just as well to be singled out in these catagories as the main catagory would just lose us in the huge list.
I've also found working on yahoo when NOT working on the engines helps. Many 'tricks' you can play to receive better listings in search engines... these same tricks will keep you out of Yahoo. So optimize the site for one thing at a time http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif Yahoo likes the Title you give them to actually match the title on your site and they do not like to see titles filled with keywords. They also like descriptions that are short and sweet one liners rather then key word filled books...
Tis my ten cents

Ya Deb. That was actually one of the best advice I've heard out of you! http://www.aota.net/ubb/biggrin.gif (except for the last 25 times I needed it, that was some good stuff too)
That 10 cents of yours already grew into a dollar, and inspired me to get my site ready for the search engines which I have failed to do so far (then again, might be weeks as I feel a bit of laziness coming on. I still haven't updated my friggin' UBB lol! http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif)

Well, I've been away from the forums awhile...so I'm catching up.
As for Yahoo!
The express [$199.] rate does not guarantee that you will get into Yahoo! It only guarantees that your submission will be placed infront of a person for approval/disapproval within 7 days. You may not get in and you don't get your money back if you don't. [[[downside]]] BUT, Yahoo! has found that the majority of the sites get in because they would have anyway...it's just faster [[[upside]]]...
Deb is right..get specific on your categories. The more targeted you are the better your chances.
BUT, if that doesn't work and IF after 4 weeks you are not listed in Yahoo!...
Call them and talk with a representative. DO NOT call if you've 1) NOT submitted your site or 2)if you've not waited the 4 weeks...they tend to frown on it...But the number is 408-731-3300. They're open from 8a - 6p PST.
Paul, don't know what your technique is but I'd be curious to see your findings when you've had others submit doing whatever it is you're doing. http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif
Hope to have helped.

As I said.."something that may be purely
coincidence OR it works."..
And seeing that someone has tried it and has been quiet.. it appears to have been a coincidence. http://www.aota.net/ubb/frown.gif (we'll give it another day)
And while we are on the subject... I am not pleased at the the way my listing was butchered, Is there a way to correct that? I emailed them but got no response.
It went from a 6 word title to a 2 word.
Ok.. I thought they wanted the exact title?
And... staying within their guidelines, I wrote a 25 word description that was not just a bunch of keywords, but a true description and that got cut down to 20.
Now what?

I submitted one of my sites three times with no reply from Yahoo! Finally, on one attempt I shortened my description and requested a listing in one category. In the final message I typed in something to the effect, "hey, we appreciate your work and your consideration, THANKS". Two days later I received the email that my site was listed!! Yahoo accounts for around 15% of my new traffic!

Paul-
I got the email from Yahoo two days after trying your tip. I now exist there.
If Paul decides to tell everyone his theory, I really suggest you wait until you have a serious problem with getting listed in Yahoo (multiple submissions over many months, with no response) before trying it, because overuse will spoil the whole thing for everyone.
Anyhow, try the other suggestions here first- especially Auteur's.. she's a smartie http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

Hmm, I got listed in 3 days! And I don't think I did anything special...
The category was small (20 sites or so) so that may help speeding up the review process.

Paul, I'd like to receive your email.
I moved my site and changed my URL with Yahoo. They've changed it in their category section but not their search by keywords - my old site is still listed there.

Hey Paul,
It seems the email you may or may not have sent me regarding this "technique" hasn't arrived - could you please send it again? http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif
You can send it to Yahoo@VDJ.Net .
I am starting a new site soon, and I would really like to know this technique - do you know how valuable this could be? Don't make me beg...

Hi Paul . . .
I can't seem to get our business site listed there, either, and I'm trying for a very small local category (currently 6 links). If the offer still stands, I would really appreciate your tips.

Thanks so much,

Hi there...
Hang in there, I gotta make sure I get one more site listed then I will be sending you the emails. I'm afraid if too many people do it, I won't be able to get mine in.

Wow, Paul! You're causing quite the excitement in this thread. :)
Thanks for the earlier compliment. Sorry for the delay in response.
As to some other questions posed here...
Tips on getting listed...other than Paul's hidden secret weapon ;)
* If you are a local company/site of local information, you have a better chance getting listed.
* If you choose a category with few links, you have a better chance of getting listed.
* If you have a description with less than 25 words [using fewer characters], you have a better chance of getting listed.
* If you've had trouble correcting/editing your current listing call the number I posted above. They're very friendly and are willing to help.
Hope this helps.
