The XL1 in a round about way does stop-motion.[nbsp][nbsp]One is to take frame by frame shots and paste them back together in the edit.[nbsp][nbsp]If you use Final Cut Pro for your editing, you can do almost anything Avid system can.
You have no speed control other than 2 tape speeds, SP: 3/4 ips(18.81 mm/s); LP: 1/2 ips(12:56mm/s).[nbsp][nbsp]Slow motion would be best created in your edit suite.
If you are seriously considering a Canon XL1, you may want to wait until spring for the new models.[nbsp][nbsp]There is talk of an upgraded (much needed) XL2 model in the mix.
If your really really serious about buying today, spend $300.00 more and get a Industrial DV camera.[nbsp][nbsp]The Sony DSRPD150 is a great value for a pro DV camera.[nbsp][nbsp]
HEADS UP:[nbsp][nbsp]there is a hiss problem that many people are experiencing in their Sony mini DV/DV gear; and amongst other quirks, the Canon XL1 has a mind of it's own sometimes when it comes to focusing.
If you can wait for the next round of models, you may save yourself some frustration.
If your agenda is stop-motion animation, have you considered using 16MM or Super 16?[nbsp][nbsp]It may be old school, but it works great for stop-motion.[nbsp][nbsp]
