OK, trying to scan in some photos for a site I'm building....photos are of "spin dry rotors"...used in the semi conductor manufacturing industry.[nbsp][nbsp]Rotors are a very glossy chrome.[nbsp][nbsp]Client has them photographed on both a white background and a black background....in both cases I'm getting washed out images of the rotors.[nbsp][nbsp]Scanning at 100 dpi on a Microtek SlimScan C3.[nbsp][nbsp]Have tried adjusting exposure, brightness and contrast, etc.[nbsp][nbsp]Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thanks much,

Phoenix

Okay since I have the same exact scanner let me see if I can't point out somethings to check on:

Using the scan wizard as reference here...so:

since you are talking photos... make sure under preference >> scan material that you have reflective selected.[nbsp][nbsp]Not sure what default is... think I set mine manually to reflective upon first use.[nbsp][nbsp]Of course use Millions of Colors.

in setting window you can select auto contrast and color correction.. not sure if that might help.[nbsp][nbsp]As far as dpi, I personally never go below 120 dpi on photos for some odd unconscious reason.

That's all I can think of off hand.

<edit>under More options icon (looks like a toolbox) you can check to see what "scan quality" your is set at... there's like a choice of final/medium/draft.... might want to try final if it's at medium or draft.<edit>

Hey Armand,

Thank you![nbsp][nbsp]I was using the default settings, checking auto contrast did the trick![nbsp][nbsp]Guess I was thinking I could adjust it better manually....NOT! hehehe

Thanks again, really appreciate the help.

Have a great day,

Phoenix

No problemo... I love Microtek when it comes to scanners.[nbsp][nbsp]Had four scanners(don't ask), only good ones were the Microteks.[nbsp][nbsp]If you ever need any more help just shout.

A while back, after doing all the reading etc...
I purchased a Microtek scanner from a Computer City store, here in Miami. I got it home and found that it was DOA. I returned it and traded for a Mustek. I have never had a problem with it.

And I've had the exact same experience with a Mustek dying on me and the software being completely wrong on the cd... loved that one.

Just goes to show... it's a general crap shoot these days sometimes.

How about getting a SCSI scanner that's not only incompatible with your state-of-the-art kickass Adaptec SCSI card, but also comes with this nice little ISA SCSI card WITH NO DRIVERS!?[nbsp][nbsp]And when you find the drivers online, they work UNTIL YOU UPGRADE TO WINDOWS 98.[nbsp][nbsp] AAAAAAAA!!!
</Rant>!

Unrelated to scanners, but how about picking up a video card and deciding you don't need to RTFM :)[nbsp][nbsp]After staring at an all blank screen for a while I open the manual to find a little note stuck inside saying something like "DO NOT let Windows 98 auto detect this video card!!!" - you have to cancel the auto detect process (kinda hard when there's no cancel button...) and tell it something completely different from what it detects.

The problem comes in when you have already let it detect - for one thing, you can't see the screen. For two, once Windows has detected a peice of hardware it detects and installs it entirely too quickly, as the drivers are already there. BTW - you cannot delete old drivers without messing up Windows... I still have drivers for my previous 2 modems, my 2 old video cards (one died, one was temporary), and whatever other hardware I have ever had in my box...

Oh, my newer sound card also had similar instructions, and both the sound card and video card were purchased since March - 98 has been out for a while by then. These people need to get with the times and keep up with the industry.

If anyone cares, Creative Labs Sound Blaster PCI-128 and Diamond Stealth 220 PCI video (4 meg) (I know, cheap video card - I was in a pinch :))

Hey think I pulled a few nerves there...lol.[nbsp][nbsp]Further support for my statement.

Just realized the c word went through and wasn't censored out... hehe

Justin-
Just because you purchased that card in March doesn't mean that it hasn't been sitting on the shelves since before Win98 came out.

Jameson,

The point I was making was that there was a little note inside the instructions warning about 98 compatibility issues on both the video and sound cards. So obviously it was not on the shelf until a while after 98 was out, but rather than shipping a newer CD with it they simply warn that you need to go download the updated drivers for it...

Now that I have the newer drivers burned on a CD I don't have to worry about it any more, but it still is quite annoying that they do that because they don't want to waste the stacks of outdated CD's they have stamped up - the note was inserted at the factory I'm sure, as it was all still in the shrink wrap (purchased OEM, BTW, but still was shrink wrapped - which may have something to do with it, since technically it was intended for shipping with a new PC...)

No big deal either way - my Voodoo 3 card came with the right drivers and worked first try (right along side the other card :))
