View Full Version : transparency problems

Anyone have any idea why my computer might be refusing to render images transparent?
I've used several different graphics programs, registered and/or trial version, and the ONLY way the transparency works is if the background is black and I set transparency equal to the background color.
Is my computer warped or what?
Ideas/solutions would be greatly appreciated.

I use Paint Shop Pro 5.01, and it's really simple. But note that you can only have a transparent color with a GIF image - not JPG or BMP etc...
Then it's as simple as clicking on Colors --> Set Palette Transparency, then use the eye dropper to select the transparent color. Note that the palette must already be reduced to 256 or less colors first - can't do it to a 24 bit image...
Hope this helps :)

Hi Justin
Yeah, I know how it is supposed to work.[nbsp][nbsp]And I have checked and double-checked all the setting in PSP (3 and 5), and Beka has tried it, and it doesn't matter what we do with the settings, the computer refuses to turn it transparent.[nbsp][nbsp]
But if we make the same image, with the same settings on the other computer, it works just fine.[nbsp][nbsp]
I don't get it.
It is a problem with my computer, apparently.[nbsp][nbsp]But I don't know what or why.
argh...

Shaytar:
What criteria are you using to determine whether transparency does or does not work?
Some things to consider to isolate the problem:
Is your browser correctly rendering transparencies? Go to this page and see if the examples are displayed correctly:

If you create a web page with a transparent gif, does everyone viewing the page not see the transparency?
If you download a known transparent gif, load it into PSP and make a *small* change (not related to transparency--like adding a little box or something), and then save it, is it still transparent?

Rich:
1) my browser shows transparency fine
2) yes, everyone viewing the page gets a non-transparent gif

this was made fresh in PSP 5 with the background set to transparent (obviously it's not)
3)[nbsp][nbsp]if I download a transparent gif, change it, and save it, (even if I tell it to maintain original file's transparency) it goes non-trans.

Well, I have absolutely no clue what would cause it not to work in PSP - are you absolutely sure you don't have it set to automatically convert to 24 bit color upon opening a file? I know there is an option for that... but it then won't let you make a transparent color until you lower the color resolution...
Oh, and BTW - that's a cool font - where'd ya get it? (I only have the fonts that come with Windows hehe - too lazy to download them)

Wellll, thanks anyway..
*sigh* so my puter is warped.

okay, I downloaded the one you stuck there (cheese.gif? lol), and added a bit to it, then uploaded it again, and lo and behold, it's still transparent.
I am so confused.

cheese.gif? lol
I had to think of a filename real quick and that was the first thing to pop into my odd mind... :)[nbsp][nbsp]I don't think it's cheesy, as I said, I like the font - I might go download some fonts tomorrow - it's sleepy time now though ;)
