View Full Version : Haaaahlelujah! Haaaahlelujah!
Just got in to check my mail (and my auction).
Guess what?!? BAN has a bidder! The current price is $1750!
Even though that is not the price I want right now, I think I know the bidder (talked through e-mails in the past couple of days) and they know that I will accept all offers above $2500 if the auction does not end the way I want it to. So I have a very good chance, especially since I think the last 2 days will be the crucial bidding times (and the personal faxes, e-mails, and letters to about 50 well-off beanie companies and sites will all be received by now).
Ahhh, the internet is great isn't it?
/me does a little happy dance! :)

Hm... the car's not for sale, but you can certainly pay my rent for a couple of months - I wouldn't object :þ

Glad to hear things are going better Tatu

PS: Justin, you pay rent for living in the server room? :D

No, actually I'm in the cabinet just down from the servers - they figured I'd need just a little more room (plus I flop around in my sleep - wouldn't want me kicking NINE by accident) ;)[nbsp][nbsp]The rent's a little high, but the A/C is great, plus the connectivity is awesome - imagine, I can acually get a 45,333 connection on their phone lines! hehe
In reality, I'm in a 1 bedroom apartment (that I love to death so far), and only connect at 31.2 kbps (stinking WinModem - fried my 56k months ago). Debating between cable access or DSL - DSL will cost twice as much, but is more reliable... both will be here in 2 to 3 weeks they say, so I will probably go with whichever is here first (maybe order both and cancel whichever is last hehe :))
What does any of this have to do with the topic? I don't know, so I'll go back in my corner and hack the UBB some more :)

I swear, as soon as BAN is sold I am setting aside a Cable Fund to be devoured the second Comcast or Adelphia finally decides to give cable internet access here. That and maybe a few other fixins' for my intimidator of a PC, or just another one, or a second 19" monitor. :)

I'm telling you - the second you start using more than one monitor you can never go back - I'm running 2 17 inchers at 1280 x 1024 w/two Voodoo3 cards, and a 14" at 1024 x 768 on a Diamond Stealth 4 meg card (all 32 bit color).[nbsp][nbsp]Only problem is, out of 4 PCI and 3 ISA slots, I'm all out... but I couldn't see going back to a single screen...
All I need now is a CPU that can keep up with the extra overhead - this 233 is getting a tad bit sluggish... and of course some kind of high speed connection.

Gee - what greedy pigs :)
Justin has two monitors - but only a 233 :)
Tatu wants a *second* 19" monitor???
I have two computers but only one monitor![nbsp][nbsp]Both Celeron 300A clocked to 450/504 with 64MB RAM.[nbsp][nbsp]Suppose I should just make one a server... LOL

OFF TOPIC (a little):
Justin, I just upgraded my old 150mz MB to a AMDK-2 450mz, and got a Creative Labs Banshee video card. Now I spend to much time playing Quake II on the net.
You think you can configure NINE into a Quake server for us to play?

Justin has two monitors - but only a 233 :)
Ahem, that's 3 monitors (see above post) :)[nbsp][nbsp]And you know, the 233 is not really *that* bad honestly - I've had it a little over a year, and when I first got it I thought it was the fastest thing I'd ever seen. Now of course I've used much faster computers since then, but I've made the most out of it...
I run 3 monitors, 2 sound cards, a modem, and a NIC card (and NO slots left open). I have 160 megs of RAM, 10 gig Maxtor drive, 4x4x32 CD-RW drive, etc. On a typical day (like right this minute), there would be the following programs running:
My little VB program that monitors the servers;
VDJ Mini (also mine) playing mp3's all day;
Between 4 and 10 IE windows, depending;
Outlook Express;
Windows Explorer;
Several sheets of Notepad;
Apache and mySQL Server;
My own CPU usage meter (VB program);
Freemem Pro :);
And of course ICQ.
And other misc. programs throughout the day. I would say the 233 keeps up quite well really :) Oh, and using Freemem Pro, I see that I usually have about 60-70 megs free at all times, except when I'm running more than one copy of Visual Basic... I've upped my disk caching (a custom hack of mine) to make use of the extra RAM, set my swap memory to my own specific settings, and done many many various tweaks to the Registry since November 1st, my last install, and so far it's been running very well for being "only a 233" ;)
Yes, a PII-450 or so would be great, but I can wait on that - I just bought 66 MHz RAM for this thing, which would be useless on any newer board (mine doesn't support PC_100). Besides, I'm still recovering from the purchase of these two 17" monitors... a new CPU / Motherboard can wait (too bad I can't over clock this one - only way is to bump the bus to 75 MHz, which of course doesn't work for more than 20 - 40 seconds without locking up).
Sneaky - Hm... sounds like a great idea, but I don't think TeRRa will let me ;)[nbsp][nbsp] I do however have a 386 SX-33 w/4 megs of RAM that I would be willing to donate as a Quake server :)

Slightly off topic:
Justin, VDJ Mini uses which plug-in to play MP3?[nbsp][nbsp]Don't tell me it's the one which requires a system.ini hack :)
I've already created a jukebox - I mean one which has been tested as a real jukebox - but I never got it into production because I've been too busy with other things.
Anyone interested?

The auction ended pretty low but I am getting some very
likable offers from the two bidders. Right now we are in negotiations. :)

I bargained out for $2200, the check/MO will probably be on its way tomorrow.

If by "system.ini hack" you are refering to the Active Movie control's hidden ability to play MP3's, that's old and outdated... the newer Windows Media Player OCX control not only plays MP3's natively, but plays them via DirectX, giving the ability to crossfade songs :) Only problem is I have to distribute the Media Player with VDJ, although most people have already downloaded it anyway.

ROFLMAOPIMP? Hmmm, that's a new one.
Care to fill us in on the acronym? :)
The check/MO did not arrive, I thought I sent off the e-mail

queque today (I use Pegasus)!
Yup, I know where I'm going: Outback Steakhouse!

ROFLMAOPIMP![nbsp][nbsp]Thought you would know that one![nbsp][nbsp]And I was crossfading songs by loading two instances - I figured you might avoid the other DLLs (I checked them all out and they were too much trouble for hardly any improvement) :)
Tatu, the check/MO arrive yet? :)
