View Full Version : teething troubles

mornin' all.

as a newcomer to futurequest i've been having a few niggles with my setup.[nbsp][nbsp]if anyone here could help with any of the following i'd be grateful.[nbsp][nbsp]saves me hassling the admins continually and looking a right eejit.

1. my site is a transfer of domain from another server.[nbsp][nbsp]at the minute everything's all over the show as pages are being served to me here in europe from various intermediary caches
around the world.[nbsp][nbsp]thus i'm getting lots of broken links and general weirdness as some pages are obviously served from out of date caches [ie the versions from my former server] and a few are being served up from the new futurequest server.[nbsp][nbsp]trouble is since the new site is identical to the old it's a bit difficult [and confusing] to see what's coming from where.[nbsp][nbsp]anybody else based at a distance from futurequest been in the same boat, and if so how long did it take to right itself?

2.[nbsp][nbsp]i can't get my email to download to via my email prog.[nbsp][nbsp]it's being stored in questmail so i can read it online but it's not coming to me. i have set up the account details on my email software according to the supplied instructions but to no avail. whenever i run my email prog i get 'you have no messages' but when i log in to quest mail[nbsp][nbsp]there they are.[nbsp][nbsp]most peculiar?

3.[nbsp][nbsp]where is everything?[nbsp][nbsp]logging in to my x-madra folder on nine i can see various folders including ftp, www, cgi-bin [empty, presumably my own one] and various log folders, infact the usual stuff you'd expect but where is the community cgi-bin and where is this CNC thingy that keeps being mentioned everywhere?

Hi Madra, and welcome to the forums :)

1) It will probably take a week or more for your domain to fully propogate (ie, for all name servers/cache's to update).

2) Do you have QuestMail set to delete mail from the server? Note that if you have QuestMail store your mail, this does not mean it's leaving it on the server - it's storing it in it's own space...

What I would do is close your browser (eg, close QuestMail), then send yourself a test message from another account. Then check your mail and you should receive it. If not... I'll think of something else then :)

3) Your CNC is located at http://www.yourdomain.com/CNC/ - you will not find a /CNC directory in your space, as it's a core system. The shared cgi-bin is the same way - the one you see is your own :)[nbsp][nbsp]You can use the shared scripts by visiting http://www.aota.net/ and selecting the script you want from the drop down list - they are all there, but aota.net shows you how to use them.

Hope this helps :)

well, i seem to have got the email sorted [at least partially].[nbsp][nbsp]i just fired up my email programme and tried the various configurations which hadn't worked last night and as if by magic one of them worked.[nbsp][nbsp]aren't computers so temperamental for such logical beings?

anyway, that's fine as it goes.[nbsp][nbsp]but when i set up another email account it goes through as if the account has been created but when i try to connect via the new account i get the dreaded "ERR- authentication error"

say i've created a user 'fred'... ive tried configuring the email to log in as 'fred' and even 'xmadra-fred'[nbsp][nbsp]with the new account password but no luck.[nbsp][nbsp]where am i going wrong?

checked out the CNC.[nbsp][nbsp]turns out it's address is case sensitive and as you've probably noticed i don't use capitals much, which is why i always got 404s before and assumed it was looking for a page in my directory.[nbsp][nbsp]nice interface.[nbsp][nbsp]i noticed a few familiar mac icons on there... and i thought i was stranded in a PC wilderness.

Just thought I'd let ya know-

Mayhap we're hosted on them durn PCs, but there are some others of us here, who, like you, use Macs and (for the most part) love 'em.

Me included! Welcome to FQ :)

hi jacob.[nbsp][nbsp]hurray for the mac users!

anyway, i thought i'd bore the rest of yez with more on my elusive email.[nbsp][nbsp]it seems to be playing up again.[nbsp][nbsp]i was getting it OK from home last night [at least for my root account] but today in work again i keep getting a...

"Pop server error “-ERR unable to scan $HOME/Maildir"

this is not an authentication error, which is what i was getting before and obviously due to a misconfiguration on my part.[nbsp][nbsp] i'm grateful for the variety but i'd still like to know what's going on.

this is quite apart from the fact that i can't access any additional POP accounts i set up.[nbsp][nbsp]anybody able to shed any light on this?[nbsp][nbsp]i do miss my daily dose of spam.

Hi Madra,

Two things to check for right off the top of my head...

1. Make sure you are setup for POP3 and not IMAP

2. Make sure your FROM address matches the address of the email account you are setting up. (the REPLY TO can be anything you like.. but the FROM must match)

Let us know if either of the above solve the problem.

hi deb.

well, this is very weird.[nbsp][nbsp]i thought i'd sussed it out about half an hour ago. i was sending test messages and they were coming through fine and now all of a sudden it's stopped.[nbsp][nbsp]i even had an additional POP email working for a wee while too

i don't know if you've got any mac experience but here's how i'm setting up my account details [in claris emailer] on my machine..

account name: blah blah whatever [just for emailer reference]
user name: xmadra-madra[nbsp][nbsp][nbsp][nbsp][nbsp]
email account: xmadra-madra@madra.net
email password: xxxxx
SMTP server: madra.net
email address: madra@madra.net [equiv to reply to address in other packages]

as i say, it seems to work intermittently, so i suppose the problem could be in the ether somewhere.[nbsp][nbsp]but even then there are inconsistencies.[nbsp][nbsp]sometimes i send myself a test message, log in with emailer and get it straight away.[nbsp][nbsp]sometimes i log in and get 'no new messages' from emailer but the messages are there in questmail.[nbsp][nbsp]now the latest variation is 'no new messages' from emailer and the[nbsp][nbsp]messages aren't on questmail either.[nbsp][nbsp]as with all intermittent problems this is making it very hard for me to pin down exactly where i'm going wrong.

when i set up the POP email the only way i could get that to work was...

account name: blah blah whatever [just for emailer reference]
user name: xmadra-joe[nbsp][nbsp][nbsp][nbsp][nbsp]
email account: xmadra-joe@madra.net
email password: xxxxx
SMTP server: madra.net
email address: madra@madra.net

as i say that worked a couple of times but seems to have now died as well.[nbsp][nbsp]i'm not sure if i'm doing this right as when i do get a message through on [say] the madra account it appears as having come from xmadra-madra@madra.net rather than madra@madra.net, yet when i set up the emailer prefs using madra@madra.net for 'email account' i get...

[nbsp]** Pop server error “-ERR unable to scan $HOME/Maildir

logic would suggest that i needn't fill in xmadra... etc as 'email account' as ive already used "xmadra-madra" as the user name so the server should know who i am without me having to prefix my email with 'xmadra' as well but as i say if i don't do it this way i get the above error.

reading the above, i'm not sure how much sense it'll make.[nbsp][nbsp]it seems perfectly clear to me but i do have the advantage of knowing what i'm trying to say![nbsp][nbsp]if you could check out my setup and see if you can tell where i'm going wrong i'd appreciate it.

thanx!

The only thing I would change on the above is the "email account" (which I realize causes another error but...)

From this: email account: xmadra-joe@madra.net
To this: joe@madra.net (changing the 'joe' part respectively)

Other than that.. from what I see above all looks correct.[nbsp][nbsp]Did you double check to make sure it was using POP and not IMAP? And did you also double check to assure the FROM address is FROM name@madra.net?[nbsp][nbsp]The $maildir is an error commonly caused from one of these two things...

As far as the "sometimes it works with QuestMail and sometimes it doesn't" this could possibly be due to the propagation you are still going through.[nbsp][nbsp]If you send it via QuestMail then it should be receiving with QuestMail because QuestMail is utilizing our DNS which is already updated correctly for you.[nbsp][nbsp]If you are sending from your own dial-up connection then this could be causing the "sometimes yes and sometimes no" problems due to propagation.

hi again deb.

latest installment.

i thought i'd try out your assumption that there might be a propogation issue with my dialup account so i've been using questmail to send messages between my root account and the POP account i've set up.[nbsp][nbsp]they seem to go through fine so that would seem to explain that. i've also sent some via another web-based email account i have and they've gone through fine also.[nbsp][nbsp]so from that point of view it seems like things will sort themselves out through time.

as regards the second problem, i can't get any of the accounts to let me in unless i prefix the email address with 'xmadra'.[nbsp][nbsp]for example i've gone to the CNC and set up a POP account 'test'[nbsp][nbsp]password 'tester'.[nbsp][nbsp]if i go to questmail and enter...

username: test
hostname:[nbsp][nbsp]madra.net
password: tester

i get....

"Username, hostname or password is incorrect. Please try again![nbsp][nbsp]Server said: authorization failed "

i can only log in to the account if i use

username: xmadra-test
hostname:[nbsp][nbsp]madra.net
password: tester

[the same kind of scenario as i'm getting with logging in via a dial-up account]

the trouble with this is that if 'mr test' sends someone an email it appears to have come from xmadra-test@madra.net. if the recipient then hits reply, their message will go to xmadra-test@madra.net which means the reply will end up in the catch-all root account rather than going to 'mr test' as it is not addressed properly for him.

no-one else seems to have 'xdomain-xxx@domain.com' email addresses around here so how come this is the only format i can set up which seems to work.

BTW[nbsp][nbsp]claris emailer only supports POP3 and not IMAP so the prob doesn't lie there.

thanx
madra

The user name does require the VMIP to be attached.[nbsp][nbsp]I was suggesting that you remove the VMIP from the email account per the example settings you had used above:

user name: xmadra-madra (good)
email account: xmadra-madra@madra.net (should be madra@madra.net)
email password: xxxxx (good)
SMTP server: madra.net (good)
email address: madra@madra.net (good)

Is this how you have it setup?

yes deb.[nbsp][nbsp]that's what i'm trying to tell you. i know i shouldn't have to use 'xmadra-xxxx@madra.net' as the email address but unless i do i get...

" ** Pop server error “-ERR authorization failed” "

when i try to log in. the server will only give me access if the email address is prefixed in this way.[nbsp][nbsp]it doesn't make sense to me and as i said this is the same whether i login via dialup or via questmail.

Try this....
Change it back to

user name: xmadra-madra
email account: xmadra-madra@madra
email password: xxxxx
SMTP server: madra.net
email address: madra@madra.net

Then check to be sure your REPLY TO address is set to madra@madra.net
