View Full Version : Sprintnet/UUnet : Taz/Six?
Understand that Six is full and won't take any more domains. No problem.
But how about moving Taz off of Sprintnet and over to UUnet? Is it more complex than just that? Never mind the servers - wouldn't we all rather be off Sprint?
Thanks,
Tom

not that this is my place to answer, but gonna guess at this.
From previous postings on this issue, I believe that this is on hold to work on other upgrades/priorities first. Main goal was to stabalize a situation, which has been accomplished.
I would also dare guess that there is more work involved than just "switching".
I know that TAZ is still in BETA.
Terra posted this on the 25th:
SIX server is currently at upgrade capacity... We will be building another server very soon... Our plans are to hold tight until we obtain the OC-12 connections... The upgraded domains were taken on a case by case basis, and moving the largest domains utilizing the most dynamic resources to the SIX server off of TAZ... Our primary objective of stabilizing the servers load (reducing downtime) and getting SSL online has been completed...
I applaud Terra's efforts and dedication.

Right now, with TAZ on Sprintlink and SIX on UUNet, the load is balanced nicely between the two.
If you go to the Status page you will notice that SIX had more downtime this month than TAZ did - remember, no matter who owns the lines or what is in the server, anything can go bad at any time. It's all chance. I think it's better having the load split across two independant carriers instead of just one.
And no, it's not just as simple as plugging in a different phone jack http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif I don't know the particulars, but I know it's not a simple task moving TAZ to UUNet.
Anyway, I'm way too tired to try to think right now http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

Understand.
I just wondered. A month or two ago, Sprint was the Darth Vader of the internet and the word was that they were moving off as fast as possible.
Now it seems like that sens of urgency is gone.

Hey Tom, I understand what you are saying, and right now, the sense of urgency is healing SIX or setting up a new server. Ain't ya glad you are still on TAZ now?
I love doing the beta stuff cuz it is my only way to help FQ and to pay em back for all the knowledge I have gained from being here.. so they can use my domain anytime to learn from me. *and to think.. I don't have to do anything* *grin*
And you have been very fortunate.. DarthVader has mellowed out and been very cooperative for the site owners.
the internet is a funny thing, you really can never guess when things are gonna go wrong, cuz if we could, downtime wouldn't be a part of our vocabulary.. http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif
Just hang tight, and enjoy the smooth sailing. http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

Our feelings about SprintLink are the same, and have never deviated...
Bottom Line: Neither the UUnet OR SprintLink connection can handle all of our traffic alone... There are only so many marbles that you can push through the pipe... Nor do we have the capability to double up either of those backbone lines (provisioning) within the short amount of time before the OC-12 NOC comes online...
We have done the best we can, with the options available to us... Our balancing measures has taken care of the bandwidth and server load issues... If anything, SIX is the server suffering stability problems at the moment, with TAZ chugging right along at %99.90 uptime this month...
