I just set up an e-mail POP account. Finally got inbound e-mail working using the VMIP, but I cannot get mail OUT. I'm just using my domain name as the smtp server as per aota tutorial..
Hey Benson,
What program are you using? What is the error you receive when you try to send out?
Let me know
Deb

I'm using Calypso, the error says "connection to socket failed", this in on Six, btw.
Because Calypso is so cool http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif I can cut and paste these settings here:
Outgoing mail server:
Type: SMTP
Server Name: mxmdesign.com
Port: 25
SMTP authentication method:[None]
Use alternate SMTP login method:No
I've tried using the alternate smtp login and some different authentication methods with no luck so far.
SMTP authentication method:[None]
Use alternate SMTP login method:No
Is there an option there to change that to PASSWORD?
You need to using a password to authenticate it...
Try that and let me know

Server Name: mxmdesign.com
I was rollerblading with my little girl.. when i got back online, you were gone. Hit me in ICQ.

Still no dice. I have tried tried the "user supplied" smtp authentication, using the POP uid and password, and every other permutation I could think of.
This is the error I'm getting:
*** Sending mail from account 'webmaster-mxmdesign' @ 3/19/99 10:38 PM ***
Connecting to: 'mxmdesign.com'
Connect.c[381] MailMgr.dll
Failed to send message.
WINSOCK Error: Host unreachable.
Connection to socket failed.
I just set up this POP account today and I can receive mail fine. Of all the different settings I've tried to SEND mail, I can't tell that I have ever even connected to the mail system. I'm not getting authentication errors or uid errors, but this connection error. Oh, the "account" label of webmaster-mxmdesign is not used for POP or smtp, it's just a name that distinguishes this account from others.

Terra,
Benson will be needing ya. (I wonder if he is posting too?) Anyways.. he tried the same settings in two different email programs.. and cannot get his emails to send. He can get them.. but not send them.
So, now it is your turn to help. *grin*

Benson,
1) What size is the email you are sending?
2) SMTP does not require login authentication like POP does... (please make sure your settings reflect this)
3) Do you have a debug mode that logs the actual conversation between your Calypso and our SMTP server? Eudora has that feature but must be enabled via it's .ini file perhaps Calypso has the same...
If so, send me a private message with the log...
I scanned our SMTP logs and did not find any errors pertaining to mxmdesign.com...
I have manually telnetted to mxmdesign.com port 25 and entered the information by hand... It accepted the mail and sent it to my private email box...
Please recheck all of your settings...
Proof of Concept:
telnet mxmdesign.com 25
helo dude
mail <webmaster@mxmdesign.com>
rcpt <test@mxmdesign.com>
data
Testing SMTP delivery
.
quit
The above will send an email to test@mxmdesign.com (forwarding to your shell email)...
Verify this first, and if it works then you will need to dig deeper into your own configuration to remedy the problem...

Hey Terra, I know this is between you and benson, but I also know the other email client he tried using was netscape. I won't pretend to know what I am talking about, but I do have a question, just recalling something you and I talked about earlier today. Would this have anything to do with his ISP server? (att.net)

Hearts, not that I'm aware of... If he has his email client configured properly, it will connect directly to our SMTP server and negotiate the transaction there...
Now if he is trying to send mail from a non FutureQuest hosted domain, the SMTP server will deny it with a 'Receipt Hosts' warning... From the error he has shown, it appears that Calypso is not even connecting properly to our SMTP server... That's why I recommended the above direct telnet connection to port 25 and test it that way... It will at least reduce the usual suspects...

I note that it DOES connect via telnet from one six account to the other, i.e. from ncbeach.net to mxmdesign.com

I just found the answer on an at&t newsgroup:
all new members have Port 25 restricted. They may request this setting be
changed on their account by calling tech support and requesting Port 25
be unblocked for them, AFTER they have been a member for at least 30
days. This policy is to reduce/prevent throw away accounts from being
used to relay spam.
You can call tech support at 1-800-400-1447 select ,0
