I was checking my stats and noticed 48 206 partial content response codes. My question is how big of a concern is this and what do I do to stop it if I need to? thanks

206s are generated after someone hits the stop button while a page is loading, then reloads it. Most modern browsers will use HTTP 1.1 to resume the download of incomplete items. There's nothing to worry about.
(The above is only to the best of my knowledge...!)

Thanks. I've actually been wondering that myself. I figured it was HTTP 1.1, 'cause I tried to find 206 in the HTTP 1.0 docs, and naturally it's not listed.
Does a 206 occur when the request is resumed or when it's stopped? I'm assuming it's when it is resumed...

i am curious though.. which gives you this error? Cuz I went to your site, and there is this one HUGE graphic.. and I stopped loading it. (that could be the one that you are seeing in your stats?)
WOW.. a whole website set aside to owning a certain car? My 2 year old would appreciate it! http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif He would think it is one of his missing hot wheels!

I'm guessing that's what causes it because I did have 48 of those errors but now I have 66 that number just jumped out at me and had an error next to it and I got a little worried..... that image is meant to fill the screen but loading time is a pain. we're more of a focal point for owners who like to get-together and have a good time in the Pacific Northwest. I run the site my dad does the photography and my uncle has the white NSX and schedules events and stuff..... by the way hotwheels makes a red and a black NSX http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

hmmmm If you go to view RFC 2068 (the one that pertains to Partial Content) do yourself a favor and don't be foolish like I was and search for "206" the page containing RFC 2068 kind of contains many instances of '206' on it :P /me says DOH!! http://www.aota.net/ubb/shy.gif
Searching for "Partial Content" worked much better http://www.aota.net/ubb/cool.gif

YUP, hot wheels does! And he has two of them! Ya reckon that qualifies him as an owner? (not too shabby for a two year old huh?) http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif
I will go back and look and hit ya in email ok?

Elliott,
I just visited your site out of curiosity from these posts, and I'll bet you're getting those 206s from user behavior like mine. As soon as I recognized the front-page image, and realized that the front page had no content and the image would click through to the actual site, I clicked through -- thereby halting the image download after receiving partial content.
If that's what your users are doing, it's no big deal. But just for fun I saved your image and tinkered with it in Photoshop. I converted it to an interlaced GIF using the Web-safe palette and reduced color depth, resulting in a 7.7k image instead of a 30.7k one. Of course there's a difference in image quality -- see if you think it's worth it.

Couldn't have said it better myself http://www.aota.net/ubb/biggrin.gif I like it, and it doesn't look much different at all.

I'm real picky about quality so I'm still debating whether or not to use jenili's graphic I would like to thank you though, for taking the time and going out of your way for a complete stranger and to give him another option. I will say that it will be reduced in file size sometime soon. again thanks to jenili and hearts(for the second page photo) and the rest of the FQ community for opinions and support.

what I dont want to compromise too much is image quality so I took it into photoshop and turned it into a 16k gif as opposed to the 30k jpg. 7.7k is a great size but remember I am VERY VERY picky when it comes to quality. it's just a preference thing. that's all. it's up at http://www.nsxnorthwest.com once again I'd like to thank you guys. I'm relatively new and can't believe how good you are to each other. you dont always realize it but we are apart of something pretty special here at FQ.
