Terra,
Had real problems connecting to aota.net tonight so I switched to my alternative isp. Much better so I ran tracert and found myself very confused. Terra, can you explain the different routes each isp take ?

This tracert comes from my regular isp -
Tracing route to aota.net [205.244.185.207]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 153 ms 134 ms 121 ms cordelia-nmc.cableol.net [194.168.10.242]

Routing is just plain Voodoo and Black Magic conjured by internet wizards...

The first trace clearly shows a major glitch with one of the Alter.net --> SprintLink switching points... 8 and 9 hop looks congested or struggling then finally BGP's past the problem and drops directly to aota.net... I would have to say that the first trace should not even exist, as 8 and 9 then directly to us is Bogus...

The second trace route looks clean and even flowing... Without any glitches along the way...

It is little know, that if you are transferring a 100K image, that image is broken up into smaller packets, of say 1k... Those packets are sent out from the server and any one of those packets can take a different route to land at your machine... Your TCP stack is responsible for reassembly and delivering it to your application layer (browser) properly...

Most of the time, all packets follow the same path, sometimes they don't... Just all depends on the Sun/Moon/Stars alignments...

And this concludes TraceRoute 101...
