View Full Version : Win95 uninstaller question

Hmm . . . I think maybe we should request an extra folder here for Xmas, for non-webpage computer related stuff. What do you think?
Anyhow, my question was this: Many times I have deleted programs using their own comes-with uninstaller. Other times, before I knew my way around Win95, I just deleted the program folders with all their contents. Now when I go under Control Panel, in Add/Remove Programs, I get this huge list of programs that "Win95 can remove" -- but over half of them don't exist any more! Is there any way I can clean it up, and clean up wherever it's getting the information that these programs are still there? I have tried a freeware utility to "clean errors from the Win95 registry" but that didn't help.
Nothing urgent, just wondering.
Thanks!

*** We prefer to remain anomalous ***
There are a number of good utility programs out there that will weed out those unassociated files, like Nut's n Bolts or Quarterdeck's Clean Sweep.
What I always do when I uninstall is to go into the program folder and look for an uninstall file. Most programs will have this uninstall feature right in the program. When you use it you will be certain of rooting out all of the shared files. If you use the uninstall option in windows some of those files will usually be left behind.
You'll need to be comfortable editing the Registry for this (the wrong change can totally cripple your system):
1) Start...run... and type 'regedit'
2) In the left pane open the folder HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
3) Keep opening folders: SOFTWARE...Microsoft...Windows...CurrentVersion
4) Now open the Uninstall folder
5) You'll see the old programs listed in the left-hand pane. When you click on one of these in the left-hand pane, the right-hand pane lists the description as it appears in the Add/Remove Programs list under DisplayName(this is where the list comes from).
6) Click the item in the left-hand pane and press Delete.
7) Exit regedit.
poof...it's gone.
To avoid this problem in the future, delete applications by:
1) Use the Control panel's Add/Remove program option.
2) And then delete any leftover files in the apps directory.
Hope this helps.

I found this great freeewarew program called moreproperties that lets you edit annoying things like that without going into the registry - hmmm lemmee see if I canb find that url -
oh here its by imaingary software http://www.imaginary.co.za
its not very fancy but before I got Nuts & Bolts it did the trick for annoying stuff like that -
Nuts & Bolts (you asked earlier - no wait that was JT well pass this on ot them!)
is a great utiliy program that does a ton of stuff - made by the same company that makes McAfee AntiVirus (a greeat anti virus program)
I just have the eval version of N&B but certainly gonna spend the $40 for the real thing. I decided to try it cuz I've been really happy with their other products and had been using PC MEdic 97 - N&B handled all the PC Medic stuff plus a lot more, so Im evealuating and I'm liking it so far.

A bit off-topic, yet on-topic...
It took me a second to make the connection on the Christmas comment...
Actually as 'Open Discussion' is a grab-bag of just about anything - nothing fell out of line... http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif
In resolution to this - Since we already have a Forum devoted to 'Mac/PPC', how about another forum devoted to 'Win95/98/NT'?
I feel that this overall thread would be more appropriate there, ((if it existed))... http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif
For which it has now shown a need...

thank you to cctech and pqwabbit.. cuz i really didn't mean to offend anyone. Rather than saying.. "check out my site".. i said Merry Christmas. Everyone seems to share here their creations.. this one was mine. And the topic was open discussion.. aslo says "get to know each other and have fun"
Lesson Learned... I will never make any kind of announcement to see one of my sites.
And yes.. my feelings were very hurt. http://www.aota.net/ubb/frown.gif
Sincerely...

Hunh?
I'm sorry, I'm very confused. I think you're referring to my first comment in the first post, that for Christmas, we should ask for another forum for computer stuff. . . ?
I know I didn't explain the thought, what I meant was what Terra said, that there seems to be a lot of posts about Windows stuff, questions about "how-to do this with the computer" that aren't about our webpages, and I thought maybe we could get a new folder for that. Definately not a necessity, just a half-joking, off the top of my head idea, thinking out loud. If it was teasing anyone, it was teasing myself, as I've been doing a lot of this non-internet computer question posting myself. I thought then this folder could be more free for things like "I'm new here," "Check out my site," holiday greetings, and such.
Hearts, I don't understand your reference, but it seems to be about your Merry Christmas post? I did open that post, but my puter time has been limited and I've had a lot to do, so I just made a mental note to come back and visit it later. I did not mean to make any reference to that post, or any of your posts, in my original post. If you are offended by something, please explain so that I might explain in return, or set it right. As far as I can guess by what you said, you thought I meant we should have a folder just for Christmas messages? This is not what I meant at all, rather, I meant it might be nice to have a new folder "as a Christmas gift" for puter techie stuff so that messages about Christmas greetings and invitations to visit would not be lost in the shuffle.
Thanks for taking the time to let me explain, and I would appreciate it if you would explain in return, as I am only guessing at what people guessed I meant.

PS. I also wanted to thank everyone who offered ideas to help with my main question (about the Win95 uninstaller function). I will try out your suggestions soon when I get time to do so. Your help is very much appreciated.

Bekariso i type.. you read. K?
Hmm . . . I think maybe we should request an extra folder here for Xmas, for

I do not know if you are from America or from a foreign country.. since I am new here. How this reads.. *to me* .. was that you were bothered by the post i left because it was not computer related... like i was intruding or out of line. And then the question that followed.. made me feel like you were polling this thought. It crushed my heart. http://www.aota.net/ubb/frown.gif
Seems everyone here invites others to their sites. That is all I wanted to do.. was welcome people to mine and rather announcing that i was new.. and saying something simple "check out my site".. I thought i could wish folks a Merry Christmas instead.
Your explanation is far different than your words meant in your original post.
I do very much respect you taking the time to apologize. I am glad ya did. Cuz I was embarassed... a sensetive heart.. I didn't like the idea of offending noone.. and I thought I had upset you. I intended on leaving the forum ... guess Future Quest is really like family huh? http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif
Thank you very much.
Respectfully...

As this is starting to fall out of the original 'Windows Uninstaller' question/solutions conversation, I'm going ahead and closing this thread...
It seems the 'Uninstaller' question was answered - and the confusion has been explained...
Enjoy the forums, and by all means, enjoy the day... http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif
