Hello everyone..

With October nearing it's end, it is once again time for the semi-regular semi-official SETI update.

First, let's go to the winner's list for this month! (Each winner will have their choice of a free IRM, IRO, or Sub- domain to add to their main account on FutureQuest) A drumroll please...

Also of note.. SETI has released SETI@home Version 3.0. You can read more about the new version (and the changes included) at the following page:

To make a notation:

Make sure you read the fine print on this SETI 3.x Upgrade before deciding to do so...[nbsp][nbsp];)[nbsp][nbsp]

Personally, I am quite pleased with the performance of my 2.x clients as they exhibit very little interference with my day-to-day activities...

I noticed that after switching from a PPro 180 to a PIII 800 the time it takes to complete a data unit has dropped from about 30 hours to under 7 (despite switching to version 3.0). The next 100 units should be coming in much quicker than the last 100. Go team FQ! :)

Hip Hip Hooray. Just checked in this morning at the forums and discovered my win! It's been really fun watching julies.NET move up the list [and I made it to 98]. I have all the children excited about joining me on the team. Even my mom may join! And my team is definitely a part of the FQ team!

I had managed to resist getting involved with seti, until I finally succumbed two months ago.

I feel it my duty to warn others that it's not as simple as it seems. It is addictive, and has a tendency to bring out unreasonably competitive characteristics.

I've made it into the top eighty so far -- my PC runs 24/7 as it doubles as a fax machine. But it's clearly not enough. If I'm going to get into the top fifty, then I'm going to need to start recruiting my friends. It's like a cult!

I know exactly what you mean John :)

I started with the intention of putting in 100 hours.[nbsp][nbsp]Then I said, 'well, it would be a shame to stop before finishing 100 work units'.

Now I'm not content with the screen saver, but instead have the command line version running full time on both systems on my desk so I can utilize the dual processors...

What is the command line version?

Yes, I just have the screen save running full time on my machine. I've done 58 units now. About two months worth. Got sucked in during one of these "announcement" threads.

I'm in the top 80 of the FQ team, now, too. Whee! :)

The command line version is a small console application (MSDOS window/Command prompt console). The advantage for me is that both computers are dual processors, and the screen saver uses only one processor (except that one takes the graphics, and one takes the number crunching, but I turned the graphics off anyway in the screensaver after watching it for week or so).[nbsp][nbsp]By running two instances of the command line console I can use both processors.[nbsp][nbsp]Some people say that it might be a tad faster even on a single processor system, though on windows 95/98 I believe it can be slower on specific angle range workunits--but the average might be ~30 minutes faster per work unit right now.[nbsp][nbsp]The disadvantage of the command line client (CLI) version is that it's not as automatic.[nbsp][nbsp]Programs like SetiSpy and SetiDriver help, but still I have to dial manually to get new workunits, etc.

--addictive, no.[nbsp][nbsp]why do you say that?

I started using the command line after the first handful of units.[nbsp][nbsp]The command line is much faster if you are letting the graphics run on the screen saver version.

I'm running version 3 now but haven't seen any difference in impact on using the computer compared to version 2.[nbsp][nbsp]Running the command line version on win2k pro.
