View Full Version : FQ Announce- In RE: To Site Owner Wish List
There has been much discussion over the past couple of months concerning Dedicated IP Addresses, Connectivity, Redundancy, Power, and even pictures of the FutureQuest NOC.[nbsp][nbsp]In response to these issues FutureQuest has been working diligently to provide the services being requested while not lowering our standards or raising the prices for the site owners.[nbsp][nbsp]Not an easy task, but certainly one that coincides with our Quest.
~~~ Mission Accomplished ~~~
FutureQuest will be moving into a brand new Telco Grade Class A NOC in Orlando Florida.[nbsp][nbsp]The new NOC and upstream will provide us with the means to offer redundancy, superb power, dedicated IP addresses, and yes even pictures.[nbsp][nbsp]FutureQuest will be the first to utilize this NOC.[nbsp][nbsp]When we say it is brand new we are not kidding.[nbsp][nbsp]Some walls are still being painted!
FutureQuest has allocated 5 cabinets, to start, within the NOC.[nbsp][nbsp]Each connected to 8 hours of battery power as well as diesel generators that will kick in if the batteries expire.[nbsp][nbsp]There essentially would be no power issues to deal with.
FutureQuest has also allocated the IP addresses we require to be able to provide the site owners each with their own dedicated IP address.[nbsp][nbsp]Note: All accounts will receive Dedicated IP addresses at no extra fee.[nbsp][nbsp]Existing accounts already setup on shared IP addresses will take time to switch over to the new IP scheme.[nbsp][nbsp]Please be patient as this area could take months.[nbsp][nbsp]It will not be a simple task.[nbsp][nbsp]We most likely will work on a by request only basis and will announce this ability after we have completed and settled into the new NOC.[nbsp][nbsp]New accounts will receive dedicated IP address upon activation.
Redundancy is now also becoming a reality.[nbsp][nbsp]To start, FutureQuest will be building on a QWEST DS-3 line along with a UUNET T-1 for initial fail over.[nbsp][nbsp]These lines are currently connected to FOUR QWEST OC-48s providing the equivalent of an OC-192![nbsp][nbsp]This area is scheduled to expand and improve even more over the course of the year 2000/2001.[nbsp][nbsp]The sonnet ring circling our new location has recently been completed and we will be tapping more lines into it as soon as possible in an effort to bring full redundancy by the year 2001.
Additionally, the NOC is monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.[nbsp][nbsp]The new NOC will be staffed 24x7 to allow for immediate access at any given time.[nbsp][nbsp]Some of you have also noticed that the FutureQuest SOHO has moved.[nbsp][nbsp]So for those curious, our Sys Admin is only 15 minutes from the NOC.
FutureQuest has been observing the building of the Network Operations Center for over a year now.[nbsp][nbsp]We are excited to see it finally become a reality and anxious to move in!!!
The first step of our move involves setting up one new Community Server, one new MySQL server, and two new DNS and Tunneling servers, at the new NOC.[nbsp][nbsp]Once completed, we will perform a hot-cut to move everything, that is currently up and running, to the new NOC.[nbsp][nbsp]This should be completed in its entirety this month (August).[nbsp][nbsp]The tunneling system is already in place and being worked on now.
For those wondering what a Tunneling System is --- Andrew has been working for quite sometime on a way to allow the renumbering (move) to happen while not allowing propagation to affect the delivery of the websites.[nbsp][nbsp]He seems to have succeeded in his goal.[nbsp][nbsp]We have a bit more testing to complete to ensure this.[nbsp][nbsp]This means the downtime during the move will be minimal and not affect visitors who may be on dial-up providers that are slow to update their DNS entries.
With that said..
FutureQuest announces a new Community Server![nbsp][nbsp]As a sidekick to DEXTER, DEEDEE has been built.[nbsp][nbsp]DEEDEE is most commonly known as Dexter's sister in the popular cartoon "Dexter's Laboratory".[nbsp][nbsp]DEEDEE was built using the same hardware/software as DEXTER and should be just as solid as her counterpart.[nbsp][nbsp]All new accounts will be setup on DEEDEE.[nbsp][nbsp] Note: DEEDEE is already sitting in the new NOC.[nbsp][nbsp]Sites on DEEDEE will have dedicated IP addresses.
FutureQuest also announces a new MySQL server.[nbsp][nbsp]MYSQL03 is a clone of the proven MYSQL02 server.[nbsp][nbsp]New accounts, with access privileges to the MySQL databases, will be utilizing the MYSQL03 server.
Many of you have already noticed that FutureQuest's DNS servers are updating as well.[nbsp][nbsp]For most we are handling this without the need for the site owner to be involved.[nbsp][nbsp]If however, you do handle your own DNS you will want to watch your email and these forums closely for the required updates.
We are positive there will be many questions that deserve answers concerning this move.[nbsp][nbsp]I am asking that you be patient with us as we go through this.[nbsp][nbsp]All of your questions will be answered accordingly however we may not have answers to your questions immediately.[nbsp][nbsp] Setting up the new server within the new NOC is only the first step.[nbsp][nbsp]After we have finished the work on the tunneling systems and have obtained all of the information, details, time frames, etc we will then be emailing each site owner with a great deal of information.[nbsp][nbsp]Today's post is an effort to fill you in concerning what many of the previous posts have hinted towards and to let you know the gist of things to come.[nbsp][nbsp]
Bottom Line --- You asked for it.[nbsp][nbsp]We're doing our best to deliver.
Thank you for growing with FutureQuest!
For all you on the FutureQuest team, that sounds great! I'm quite excited to see FutureQuest expanding at such a huge rate! And Qwest is your upstream? You didn't buy a company out and try to cover it up with a 'w' instead of a 'u' did you? ;)[nbsp]
Does the new NOC has good connectivity to Europe ?
One of my site audience being mostly european, I'm wandering.
Thanks,
Benj
DEEDEE is already at the new NOC.[nbsp][nbsp]Clicking Here (http://www.b2bquest.net/cgi-bin/sup/ping.pl) will provide you with a trace route and ping from DEEDEE to your computer. (allow it time to load -- the page wont show until all of its work is completed)
2) IE 1.0 will be able to view your site. You mean I upgraded the IE that NT4 came with for no good reason?[nbsp][nbsp]HMPH![nbsp][nbsp]:P
Actually I never used the browser on that machine, but some software I installed on it NEEDED some component from IE5.[nbsp][nbsp]Oh well... luckilly it's free.[nbsp][nbsp]Every so often I'd use the IE that came with NT just to go to my site and see the cute "Step into the future" message.[nbsp][nbsp]:D[nbsp][nbsp](Ok, so I don't have a life. :P )
P.S.[nbsp][nbsp]Hey I have to fly to Gainsville.[nbsp][nbsp]Should I take an extra day or two out there and help you move?[nbsp][nbsp]:D
Wow - I can't believe it![nbsp][nbsp]Dedicated IP's AND redundancy within two months of being here![nbsp][nbsp]FQ is incredible...
But now I have a problem.[nbsp][nbsp]People always ask "what are the advantages and disadvantages" to this or that host.[nbsp][nbsp]Will people believe me when I say, "no, there really aren't any disadvantages to FQ.[nbsp][nbsp]There used to be one thing that people debated might be a single disadvantage, but they took care of that too..." :)
From my location I found that Deedee is 17 hops while Phoenix is 12, though DeeDee pinged faster.[nbsp][nbsp]And from domain watch, the situation is reversed with Deedee 14 hops away vs. 20 for Phoenix.[nbsp][nbsp]Why is it that the times are never added up as a sum in traceroutes like at the bottom of pings?
Also, is there any site which offers good summary information for multiple tracrt / ping locations?[nbsp][nbsp](I currently use tracert.com to get multiple individual tracrt and ping sites, but it would be nice if there was a site which would add up the "big picture" automatically as well as provide the details.)
Thanks again everyone at FQ for a job extremely well done :)
Will people believe me when I say, "no, there really aren't any disadvantages to FQ.[nbsp][nbsp]There used to be one thing that people debated might be a single disadvantage, but they took care of that too..." That's easy.[nbsp][nbsp]The obvious disadvantage to FQ is that they make it very difficult to complain.[nbsp][nbsp]:P[nbsp][nbsp]C'mon, give us something to gripe about![nbsp][nbsp]Can't we at least get 5.01% downtime for a change, slow server response, unanswered support questions, capped bandwidth, or floods of spam???
What can people complain about FQ, Dan?
1) FQ does too much to make the customers happy
2) Their computers and servers are too well built and well run
3) They have too many trained and experienced personnel
4) Technical support is answered way too fast, and correctly
5) They offer way too many services to site owners
6) They create a community among their users
7) Their bandwidth is too good, and sites load too fast
8) There's not enough downtime
9) They tell the truth
10)And they keep getting better
Oh wait, I think those are the complaints of the crappy, fraudulent web host from whence I came ;)
And while I don't necessarily understand every little detail of the massive upgrade going on at FQ, I do know it's nothing but good.[nbsp][nbsp]It has been nothing but a pleasure since my first day here as a site owner, and I would just like to say thanks again. Thanks for being the best host on the web, and thanks for taking such great care of us.[nbsp][nbsp]It really doesn't get said enough.
Best of luck on a smooth, efficient and uneventful move and upgrade to the new building and services.
Hey guys-
I'm in a bit of a situation.[nbsp][nbsp]I'm in the midst of setting up an account with NorthSky to offer free hosting on my site.[nbsp][nbsp]They need an IP address of where I want to direct traffic to my main domain.[nbsp][nbsp]Right now I could give them the current address of 208.243.19.61 - but I fear having to change this with them in a few days/weeks/months after the dedicated IP is received.
Per Deb's initial post, you will be announcing the ability to setup the dedicated IP's on existing accounts when you are able.[nbsp][nbsp]Is there a time frame that this is expected to happen?[nbsp][nbsp]In other words, if you are able to start doing this within the next couple of weeks I will wait; if you won't have this ability for a month or more, I will do it now and go through and change all the IP records at that time.
Please don't consider this a rush or a request, I'm just looking for a basic ballpark timeframe that you think you'd be able to have the ability to switch existing domains to the dedicated IP.
Thanks much :)
In spirit, yes...
However, it will still be used for other things - mostly internal...
Note that those still on shared IP's must still use the VMIP style addressing for their POP login account...
AND DON'T CALL ME SHIRLEY!
"It's a hat, it's brooch, it's a pterydactyl..."
Thank you guys.
Another service might have waited until a few days before the planned move (a week after I published my site on the search engines) and then put out a little "oh, by the way..." email or announcement.
You have that "young company" enthusiasm that has been so important in this industry, but you guys also have a level of professionalism and integrity that is refreshing.
Thank you for handling this right.
Hi,
I must admit that I'm visiting these forums not often enough to really stay up-to-date with all these news. FQ needs some problems to drive me back here more often :)
It's great to read that FQ is on its way. I wish you every good luck available in this world so that everything goes smooth, even if I think you don't need the luck as you're quite capable of handling anything that might happen.
Greetings from Bonn, Germany
Which broker trades FutureQuest, Inc. stocks?
>Which broker trades FutureQuest, Inc. stocks?
Bite your tongue!
That's all we need is for FQ to become beholden to greedy stockholders who just care about the bottom line regardless of how awful or crappy it makes the company in the end!
Let them keep all the profits for themselves and continue to answer to no one but themselves (and their clients) and continue to produce an excellent product and we'll all be happy. Just like Id Software. They're happily private too and #1!
Here is what I saw on one of my site:
"It Worked! The Apache Web Server is Installed on this Web Site! "
:)
Do FQ reinstall everything ?
