*grumble!!!*
While working around the UPS's (how do you pluralize UPS???) I accidently kicked the breaker on ASTRO's UPS... :(
It is now going through a cold boot w/ fsck involved - double :(
ASTRO should be back online very shortly...
Sorry about that...

I thought that was what the covers for the CD Jewel cases were for ... that and some handy duct tape and you have a switch protector!
Glad I'm not the only one!

I'm not sure what kind of battery is in your UPS, but I think some use a lead-acid battery, much like a car battery. I know you can ruin a car battery by placing it on/near concrete... maybe the cynder block is not such a good idea...
I just keep mine on top of one of the PC's, since it's pretty much out of the way there. Oh, and mine does have an indentation where you can't easily trip the switch by accident... it's recessed.

Reminds me of a story I heard a while back about a helmsman on a nuke attack sub who crossed his legs and accidentally bumped the engine order telegraph from 1/3 to ahead flank. The problem is that they were shadowing a Russian sub and the noise caused by throttling up to 100% must have caused Ivan to stain his pants. You know what it's like to have someone sneak up behind you? Imagine a 4,500 ton submarine suddenly appearing behind you and closing fast. All I can say is, at least Terra's little mishap didn't almost start WWIII.

It's been disputed widely about why batteries do that. But the best one I have heard yet involves the tendency of concrete to be cooler then the outside temps, causing condensation in the battery and making all the water go to the top, and the heavier electrolite (sp?) to go to the bottom. All of this is not likely to happen with the gellcell in the UPSes(?), because the "juice" inside is in a gell like state. And if said concrete is inside and of the same room temperature as the battery, it's even less likely to cause problems.

Trying to out do Terra in the techno speek. :)[nbsp][nbsp]

I don't think it's the condensation that does that - considering most lead-acid batteries are outdoors (in a car/boat/wherever) and are made to withstand cold temperatures... Though I honestly don't have a better explanation - I've just always heard that you don't put a car battery near concrete...
I'm not sure about the gel filled ones though - hadn't considered that... I know some car batteries use the gel, and I know it can concentrate a lot more power per cubic inch (and it just occurred to me that that's what's in the UPSs...) - so maybe my little theory is wrong :)
Thinking about it though, if concrete were a problem, it seems there would be a warning with the UPS about that (like there are warnings about everything else)... so my advice is to ignore my advice :P

Maybe if you put tires on your UPS to separate it from the concrete...
