View Full Version : CNC Version 2.1

Around midnight tonight, the newest revision of the CNC Control Panel will go online. There are quite a few small additions:

FileQuest:
Cookies are no longer used. Your preferences are now stored in a file on the server, to prevent the need for cookies. This also allows you to use multiple computers or browsers without having to reset your preferences.

For those of you wondering "What preferences?", there are a few new options under the new "Advanced Options" dialog, in addition to the Recent Folders and FileQuest Sort Order that were stored in cookies. The new options include:

Show or Hide the "Recent Folders" list - some people may find the list annoying, and you can now get rid of it if you choose.

Recursively delete directories - this option should only be used by advanced users, as it will allow you to delete non-empty directorys. Note that, of course, this will delete everything in that directory, so use with extreme caution... I would personally recommend only enabling this option when you need to use it, then turning it off to prevent accidents...

You can also choose whether uploading a file of the same name should overwrite the previous file, rather than the CNC automatically renaming the file. This should be handy for site updates etc.

There is also a new File View option in FileQuest - this lets you view any text-based file, without having to open it in the editor. This is most handy when the file is not writable (the editor will only open a file you can write to). It also supports optional syntax highliting, though it's far from perfected at this point :)

There are also a couple of other minor prefs settings. These, as well as the Recent Folders, are all stored on-server rather than cookies, for faster loading and less dependance on browser/PC.

Troubleshooting:
Script Troubleshooter does a bit more than it used to. First, it will troubleshoot any CGI script, be it Perl, PHP (written as a CGI), bash, or anything else with a shebang line. It will determine if the specified interpreter (/usr/bin/perl, for example) actually exists and is executable, it will check all required Perl modules if it's a Perl script, and much more. It should help in pinpointing script installation problems.

The formatting of the Ping & Trace Route section has been fixed - previously it seemed the tracert was all on one line...

Email Manager:
You can now see how many messages are in each of your POP accounts, as well as how much space each account as a whole is consuming. Note that messages that have been downloaded but "Left on server" are counted as Old messages, where new one's are New. This should help in two areas - keeping you from deleting a non-empty POP box by accident, and if you have many people using POP accounts, you can see who's using too much of your space (if they are leaving mail on server, for example).

There are a few other very minor updates, tweaks, and bug fixes in the CNC Version 2.1, but the above covers the important factors I believe.

One important thing I left in before that I had not intended was the note stating that it was "Best viewed" in IE - this is completely not true, as the CNC looks identical in every respect in both IE5 and Netscape 4.7, in a side-by-side comparison. There is absolutely no difference, and I feel that the wording made it sound like IE was being prefered over other browsers. The paragraph has of course been reworded now.

Remember - the updates will be put into place sometime around Midnight EST tonight, so don't go rushing to your CNC just yet :)

Please post any problems experienced once it is in place.

Comments anyone?

Is it working ok?

Multi-browser compliant? (NS/IE)

Multi-platform compliant? (PC/Mac)

Are we heading in the right direction with the CNC features?

I think it's great that we can see the number of e-mails and the total file size of the pop accounts.[nbsp][nbsp]I think that the CNC is looking mighty good.[nbsp][nbsp]I guess the only thing, at this point ;)[nbsp][nbsp]that I would like to see is a way to click on a sub-domain and see just their stats?????
Great Work and once again I am Soooooooooo Glad I moved to FQ !

Nice work![nbsp][nbsp]The alphabetical order of the browser names is quite convenient...[nbsp][nbsp];)

Where do you set the options to delete directories?[nbsp][nbsp]I can't find it.[nbsp][nbsp]Just thought I'd try it out on a directory with hundreds of subdirectories that I'll be recreating anyway...[nbsp][nbsp]Deleting them one by one through ftp wouldn't be fun, not that that's the backup plan.[nbsp][nbsp]I do have a nice wipeout.cgi script (written for the Links program) that is dangerously powerful.[nbsp][nbsp]Set the path to the directory you want to delete, upload it, and run it from the browser.[nbsp][nbsp]Poof, no more directory![nbsp][nbsp]Then remove it from the server before it's accidentally put to use.[nbsp][nbsp]Maybe one of these days I'll put it in a password protected folder or add a log-in to it...

Anyway, back to the CNC...[nbsp][nbsp]I noticed in the CNC help popup from FileQuest that clicking on Password Protect Directory takes you back to the help topics page.[nbsp][nbsp]Maybe the help file is password protected?[nbsp][nbsp];)

That's about all I can think of remotely useful to add.[nbsp][nbsp]I'll stop now and spare you...

...and then he reads the directions...[nbsp][nbsp]What's this advanced options nonsense????[nbsp][nbsp]:)

One thing you might want to change is rename the select box option "Delete Selected Files" to "Delete Selected Files/Folders" or something like that.[nbsp][nbsp]Once you allow for deleting directories, it would be nice to know that the same option deletes both.

Deleting that directory just saved 12 meg![nbsp][nbsp]My account will be that much smaller once I finish testing that script and remove the duplicated directories...

Directions?!

The alphabetical order of the browser names is quite convenient... Hm... Interesting, but I actually listed them in order of (my personal) preference ;)[nbsp][nbsp] Actually it's just coincidence that it ended up alphabetically... Notice they're also in descending order of highest version number available - IE has 5.5, Netscape has 4.7, Opera is at 3.5x, and WebTV at 2.0... Or you could say they are in descending order of how much RAM is required to run each browser... ok, I'll stop now...

When in FileQuest, click on [Advanced Options] near the upper-right, after "Index of /big/dom/blah/blah"... This takes you to the options page to set the recursive delete option (and more).

The help section is something I haven't updated in a while - and I will be working on it some more. Any time it is called with a keyword that does not exist, it defaults to the main help index, to avoid errors - apparently I never wrote that section (or the keyword is typo'd somewhere)... It's on my TODO list :)

Hey, I finally wasn't the one getting beaten out by a mere minute or two on a post and looking like the fool![nbsp][nbsp]:P

By convenient, I was getting in a good-natured shot at you for listing them in your order of preference, seeing as how you had removed the "works best in IE" line.[nbsp][nbsp]:)[nbsp][nbsp]However, your honesty got the better of my verbal sparring...

I guess I should start reading my posts after I post... :)

As for the options in the drop down - you always could delete a directory (or rename, move, chmod, etc) - it only had to be empty. Now you have the option of not requiring the directory be empty. I suppose I could change it to "File/Directory" for all options that can apply to both...

As for browsers, I removed that &quot;best viewed&quot; line because it should not have been there in the first place. Initially it was best viewed in IE, because some of the CSS was lost in Netscape (font would keep reverting to default), and the <HR>'s would not color like they do in IE. But since then (before the CNC was ever released), I decided to use images for the <HR>'s and I have found the CSS work-around for Netscape, thus making the two render the CNC identically.

The only reason it would be &quot;best viewed&quot; in IE are the reasons all sites are best viewed in IE - because it's my browser of choice. So to be correct, the line would read &quot;Best viewed in your favorite browser&quot;, but instead I decided to just remove the line :)

I like the new CNC... but then I liked the old one too. Viewing the status or usage of pop accounts is a great addition. As with all of your information, I really appreciate the help pages and the way you have archived such useful information. Whenever I have had a question I have always been able to find the answer and help myself.

One request that I would have is regarding the statistics. I would like to be able to view the history of hits by day instead of a compiled total from the first of the month until present for the top 10 URLs. But this is a nit and I know that you do not write that software - maybe you could pass it on to the author.

Thanks!

I really like the CNC.[nbsp][nbsp]Just one request: could it be made SSL?[nbsp][nbsp]If the password is already sent encrypted that's less important of course.
