View Full Version : FQuest Question: Need suggestions for ezMLM domain name
Terra
12-09-1999, 07:12 PM
We are currently considering a new 3rd level domain name (Domain Stack) for the ezMLM mailing list feature...
Right now, the format is:
mlm.acme.com
There have been several emails to 'support@' concerning this, as it closely resembles 'MLM == Multi Level Marketing' which can project a negative image on your mailing list...
So I am asking now for suggestions to replace the 'mlm.' with something new...
Requirements:
1) Must be 5 characters or less (preferably 3)
2) Must be all characters [a-z]
3) Must be intuitive
Sidenote: The 'mlm.' is required for the mail system to properly route email into the ezMLM handlers and cannot just use the stripped domain of 'acme.com'...
So, let the suggestions begin... ;)

The shortest that makes sense:
list.
I vote with Charles:
list.

As plain as an acronym loving fool can get (I am talking about me, not you guys), but I have to admit I like 'list.'
Unless someone suggests better... I am stumped tonight for some odd reason.

Hate to second-guess myself:
lists.
?
When TeRRa first told me he was going to leave it up to the community, I had simply answered with list myself..but then I thought, well maybe the community will be more intuitive than I am in the area and come up with something really kewl and specific ---
Now I know I must have already been really kewl and intuitive since now I know you all agree lol

Sorry Justin, but I have to disagree with the "spam." idea since if it was used people would think it was spam.[nbsp][nbsp]But maybe "notspam" would be a great idea! By using "notspam" then no one would ever consider it as a piece of spam since it clearly states that it is not spam! :)

Just my 2cents... ;)
Can we find something more upbeat and snappy than 'list.'?[nbsp][nbsp]To be honest, I can't think of anything better myself...
I thought 'mlm.' was a cool name with a twist (plus it flowed with just about any domain name)... ;)
Somehow to me, 'list.' just does not sound right as a domain prepend...[nbsp][nbsp]In the end, the decision is yours, made from a selection of multiple ideas (like Justin proposed) no matter how scatter brained... :D

I am extending the limit to 6 characters, to help ease selection...
The DS chosen will replace the 'mlm.' stack...[nbsp][nbsp]All NEW mailing lists will use what is selected...[nbsp][nbsp]We are now coding in backwards compatibility for those with existing 'mlm.' mailing lists...
I like the following so far:
digest (sort of misleading as ezMLM doesn't do digests)
nexxus (sounds cool!)

I'm shying away from 'list.' or 'lists.' because I believe this will generate confusion...[nbsp][nbsp]Is it list or list(s), see what I mean... ;)

But then I thought of something I thought was really good:

OK, apparently
-jot
wasn't such a hot idea. I kind of liked it (you know, like "jotting down a note"). There was a game my hubby and I used to play when we were dating called "jotto". Kind of reminds me of it.
Do you like "jotto"? <kidding>
OK, so then I thought:
-dotdash

So it's seven letters. Shoot me.

You have to be careful with acronyms - this is the whole problem with the current "mlm" - MLM == Mailing List Manager, but it is seen as Multi-Level Marketing or something like that... Plus you don't know what it might stand for in another country. It reminds me of the Chevy Nova. They could not sell these cars in Mexico because they saw it as "no va" (Spanish), which means "no go" - would you buy a car if it were called a Nogo? (well, people do buy Yugo's...)
At any rate, I vote for either LIST or LISTS, the pluralized version being my first choice...

Well, I can see Justin's point. However...etc. seems fairly safe to me. Even if it might have something else associated with it in another language, enough people are familiar with it world wide as an abbreviation from Latin that I don't think it would confuse anyone.
I guess I'm one of the oddballs that don't prefer list or lists.
List is my voted, although I clearly see TeRRa's point in differentiating between LIST and LISTS. "What if we have two lists?", "What if it is named LISTS and we only have one?", etc. etc.
However, my starwars suggestions seem better suited for a server or something... but my suggestiong still stand. :D

12-12-1999, 10:59 AM
I guess I'm not altogether clear on how this choice of name is going to affect us individual site owners.
Am I going to have to modify in any way my already existing lists?
When we create a new list, how/when will we use this new "server name"? Somehow, I thought the 'mlm' extension in front of xdomain would still be there when I send mail to the list because it is part of the script, as written by the author thereof?
Justin
12-12-1999, 11:26 AM
The "mlm" subdomain is something Terra added himself... it's difficult to explain why it needs to be set up with a subdomain but there is a good reason. This is not something coded into ezMLM - notice that when you create the list, you are specifying the hostname as the last parameter on the command line (mlm.yourdomain.com)...
Your existing lists will not need to be changed, and the upcoming CNC release handles both "mlm" and "REPLACEME" (obviously to be replaced with the new subdomain once a decision has been made ;) ) for existinlg lists. It will only allow creating new lists with the new name...
I have to stand by my vote for "lists" as the best choice - you really can't find anything simpler that a) describes the purpose of the subdomain, b) does *not* happen to stand for a more unwanted acronym (that we know of yet :þ), and c) is a "one size fits all" that would make sense to most everyone.

What about ezmlm?
list-subscribe@ezmlm.vdj.net - of course in this particular case the subdomain is bigger than the domain... but it would differentiate between our idea of MLM and what others perceive it as... or not... idunno...
I like "mlm" myself - it's easy to type, only 3 letters, and stands for mailing list manager - if users perceive this incorrectly, well, they obviously signed up for the list, right? They *should* know why they are on the list, regardless of what the subdomain says... but I'm outnumbered in that theory, so I say "lists" - or was it "list"? hehe ;)

The problem with 'mlm' is there are more and more 'spam' filters looking for this...
mlm == Multi-Level Marketing
ezmlm == easy Multi-Level Marketing
both prime spam block candidates... :(
Personally I loved 'mlm', quick, easy, meshed with just about any domain...
I like a couple that Elite suggested:

That whole easy typing thing goes out the window with OTHER domains, Justin.[nbsp][nbsp];)
In fact, it really depends on typing habits.[nbsp][nbsp]I find lol.solareclipse.net much easier to type than mlm.solareclipse.net
How about something like listman?[nbsp][nbsp]Oh, wait, that's seven...[nbsp][nbsp]D'OH![nbsp][nbsp]
I agree with Capps. Throw that easy typing chart OUT! :)
It varies with typing habits and HOW MANY times are we going to be typing this anyways? A couple times a week at the most. HOW MUCH time are we sacrificing for an excellent name? Maybe 3 seconds a week.
Hunkorama: Read the 5 other pages of the post to see why "list" and "lists" are black listed. ;)
I vote for epost I guess. Although I don't use MLM right now, I am certain SOME DAY I will be using it alot and then my vote will be paying off. ;)

The main problem I see is that a lot of the suggestions are too specific for a certain use... it really needs to be a one size fits all... WORK, for example, doesn't work (no pun intended) if your site is all about no work, all play ;)[nbsp][nbsp]That was just an example, but it seems that for just about all of the suggestions so far, I can think of a site or two we host that just wouldn't work...
MGR is ok, but I still vote for LIST - 4 characters, easy to type... I don't see anyone *ever* having to really type out the address anyway if you think about it - the CNC shows you the addresses you need to know (with actual list name and domain etc), so it's just copy/paste. Plus of course you don't have to type it on the command line. The new CNC is only a couple weeks away (there's a new sneak-peak screenshot, BTW, on the status page ;) )...
Ah, well... I'm only arguing LIST because I can't think of anything better than that IMO :)

They do have to mostly have to do with mail, or posting or sending or something to do with a list, since we don't all use them for the same purpose, as Justin mentioned.
For instance, we couldn't call it "discuss" (length aside), since some of us only use our list for announcements and not for discussions.
Hello,
After reading all posts I though of one possibility, just think what a list does it either portrays information regarding announcements from a site or a live discussion of some topic or issue, the bottom line is that information travels around with one purpose alone to communicate or retrieve information, so why not call it "info" this works on[nbsp][nbsp]any site very well and causes no confusions as[nbsp][nbsp]in : "list-subscribe@info.acme.com" it also works on many languages because it's just the first 4 letters and it portrays the understandig of the same thing with all of them, and at least for me no problem typing it, and are practically the same in at least 5 languages so that my 2 cents.

Can we just pick something already!? ;)[nbsp][nbsp] I wasn't really with the 'list' people in the beginning, because I thought this was a great place to be creative.[nbsp][nbsp]Then I woke up.[nbsp][nbsp]There's no way to fit everyone's purposes and/or intended "feel" of their list, so it just has to be that boring... 70 posts later, we're right back at the beginning! :þ

Something as seemingly simple as choosing a replacement to 'mlm.' has generated over 70+ messages, yet still no resolve...
This has definitely been a curious thread at best... ;)
I wonder if this is what the United Nations is like... :D

PS: if 12/20/1999 arrives and no suitable name is selected, then we will keep the 'mlm.' and try again next year...
PSS: If someone emails support@ and asks why 'mlm.' then I can point them to this thread... <evil grin>

I think we should vote on a name. Enough suggestions have been made.

It would be much easier if we were presented with a list of potential candidates....[nbsp][nbsp]:)
I like "talk".
:)
No particular reason...I just think it's catchy ;)[nbsp][nbsp]

This thread makes me wish for forum software that supports voting.[nbsp][nbsp]I like info, agent, elist even jot (all because they are pronouncable).

I know, hopefully I didn't beat a dead horse, here are my suggestions.
But first a question, will there be a lot of maintainence to go through once the name changes? Will people have to re-subscribe. I was just going to set up a mailing list, but thought that it might be wise until a new name is assigned.
My lame attempts:
BLITZ - Mailing blitz, might be construed as "negative"
YUNO - I always start my email as "you know...."
AMIGO - Make a run for the border with your mailing list friend!
EPI - As in epi-mail center, or epi-center.
FESTUS - I just like the name
FESTER - Your uncle
CHEEZ - Cheese-Mail!
WIRE - Just off the wire!
REXX - Man's Best Friend X-tended!
edited to say that I like INFO and AGENT also...

A little e-mail bird told me a couple of days ago, that for now it will remain mlm (past the deadline for the new CNC) and that in the new year this thread will be resurected.
For my part, I think that suggesting new names is a bad idea. There have already been too many suggested, and making even more suggestions only makes it more difficult to come to a decision.
Here is a list that I culled from this thread on Dec. 16th:
(The list definitely needs pruning):
