View Full Version : FQ Alert: Hurricane Floyd

TONIGHT...VERY WINDY WITH PERIODS OF HEAVY RAIN AND SQUALLS. LOCALIZED FLOODING POSSIBLE. LOW IN THE MID 70S. NORTHEAST WIND 40 TO 60 MPH WITH HIGHER GUSTS POSSIBLE IN SQUALLS. CHANCE OF RAIN NEAR 100 PERCENT.

http://www.weatherforyou.com/ Predicting the weather is a tough one for sure... which is why we are watching very carefully the path that Floyd is taking.[nbsp][nbsp]The hurricanes certainly have a mind of their own as to where they are going and how fast they will get there.[nbsp][nbsp]Even the pros can not predict where exactly this storm is going to hit but the ideas are becoming more and more stable as the clock ticks.

I am more concerned for the *many* people that are in a much greater danger zone than FutureQuest is... so please remember them as you watch this storm run its course.

FutureQuest is located in Kissimmee Florida which is quite a ways inland.[nbsp][nbsp]Note: that as much as a hurricane is devastating to the coastal regions, the coastal regions are just as devastating to the hurricane itself.[nbsp][nbsp]Land is what kills a hurricane.[nbsp][nbsp]The actual hurricane would not hit Kissimmee.[nbsp][nbsp](obviously anything is possible with the weather and natural disasters but history dictates it wont).[nbsp][nbsp]What we are dealing with is the heavy storms, squalls, and wind that will be visiting this week.

Backups are obviously in place in various locations as a preventative measure in the event that the NOC were to be damaged during this time.[nbsp][nbsp]A disaster plan is also prepared and ready to roll if by some freak of nature we need to implement it.[nbsp][nbsp]The fear of catastrophic damage is minimal however, we do recommend, as always, that you keep a local copy of your files available to you.

The main concerns will be in the area of connectivity for all of Florida.[nbsp][nbsp]Though our NOC and local lines may be fine there is an overwhelming chance of various connections between here and there (wherever 'there' may be) will be taken out whether it be due to power outs or phone lines being taken down, communication towers, microwave links, and even general congestion due to the higher usage that will take place across all types of communication lines due to the emergency situation.

During times like this it is recommended *not* to waste valuable connectivity 'chit chatting' as to leave the lines open and available for the emergency personal and those in need at places such as 911.[nbsp][nbsp]FutureQuest also plans to be considerate in this area.

The availability of Technical Support will be minimal during this storm.[nbsp][nbsp]We will be concentrating on *many* aspects of the storm before, during, and after it strikes and passes us.[nbsp][nbsp]As the storm heads up the coast the risk of connectivity failure is still great... http://www.uu.net/lang.en/network/usa.html As we all know, any major line that is cut off causes extreme congestion and slow downs across the world where the Internet is concerned.

If you are unable to reach your site -- We ask that you avoid emailling technical support.[nbsp][nbsp]We are and will be watching the connectivity extremely closely and will already be aware of problems as/if they occur.

Wish us luck of course -- but if you pray, pray for those along the coast more than for your web sites and host.

Howdy Deb,

Thanks for the info.[nbsp][nbsp]We're thinking of you guys, as well as anyone else down there who's affected.[nbsp][nbsp]We have family in Aventura.

Stay safe,

PS:[nbsp][nbsp]Bummer about Disney, but even Mickey and Minnie have to be careful.[nbsp][nbsp]:(

Watch out for those tornadoes hurricanes can spawn 'cause they are just as bad or maybe even worse than a hurricane! I don't take them lightly anymore after my aunt and uncle in Atlanta had their home completely demolished and neighbors killed. We went to the scene 2 days afterward and I have never seen such destruction. They were lucky they had a basement.

You guys take care!! Hopefully it won't be too bad for you.

*This is your mother speaking ;) .... Just remember property can be replaced but your life cannot!

I figured you'd be throwing a few sleeping bags down at the NOC... not for the servers' benefit, but it might be safer there.[nbsp][nbsp]:D

Thanks for everything (and the plug, Deb ;))... you are doing great with my sites.[nbsp][nbsp]There was one bug that showed up today, only because you were delivering information so quickly! :)[nbsp][nbsp]But that was my problem, which has now been fixed.

We did pray for you and everyone along the coast.[nbsp][nbsp]A lot of my co-workers have friends and family in that area.[nbsp][nbsp]Now it looks like South Carolina needs the prayers!

At least the servers know when to behave themselves! :)

Take care!

heh the NOC is much safer than our home (imagine that!)... but yes, it looks like all is well on this end :)[nbsp][nbsp]We still have the typical wind etc to keep an eye on but the stress has settled... now I just have to figure out how to get all this tape off the windows and clean them *sigh*

I only wish Floyd could treat those north of us the same as he seems to be treating Florida.

Connectivity will continue to be concern, as always, simply because any major backbones that are affected tend to affect the net as a whole... so remain aware of that end of the spectrum...

Our best wishes/prayers are with all that are watching, waiting, and wondering where it is that Floyd is wanting to visit.
