Good morning, http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

I am working on a tutorial to help ya's install cgi scripts, and this is geared towards those that have not installed before, and those that are set up at FQ.

Would ya's mind to look at this and let me know if there is any other info that you would find important?

Feel free to email me hearts@heartsweb.com or post here with your suggestions. I would appreciate it.

And if I have something wrong, BE NICE. http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif

Thanks

DUH! It would have been most helpful if I left the URL. *giggle*

Hearts! Hey, nice job...just what the doc ordered for cgi newbies.

Just a few suggestions:
--explain what CGI means

--explain what cgi-bin means

--don't use lingo until it's 'splained; ie, "chmodding"--what IS it (I know it is detailed near the end, but it's never fully explained as to what CHMOD means before using it as a verb up near the top

--typo alert! Write=2 http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif

It might be useful at the top to add that the text editor MUST be capable of saving a file as an ASCII file. For example, when using Wordpad and saving changes, it'll ask you how you want to save it, and and the answer must be "text document".

That was a great idea to briefly 'splain adding subdirs below cgi-bin and www to help keep things organized. We've added a number of simple scripts to our church website, and keeping 'em out of each other's way I learned that little solution early on. Subdirs for scripts below both cgi-bin and www are named the same, and I set ws_ftp up with separate automatic logins to each script.

Again, nicely done! Wish I'd had it a month ago http://www.aota.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

Looks good...while I was reading it, I realized that I had the wrong 'sendmail' path in the UBB script that I installed this morning. Maybe that's why I got no response to a mass mailout to the registered users that I sent right after installation.

Thanks
