get around this darn one connection only issue. We have two puters, one phone line, and one net connection. We can't LAN, cuz our ISP doesn't support it. We can't afford the second phone line and the second Net connection. Why isn't there an easy way around this? Why can't we have both puters connected at the same time?
I know I know... commercialism and all that, pay for the services so that they can be maintained.....
but gosh darn it, it just don't seem fair!
at $21 a month (Can. $, multiply by 1.6 to get US) plus the $30 a month Bell charges just to have a phone line -- its outrageous!
argh
ok, done venting now

other way around, JT -- multiply the US by 1.6 to get $Cdn. To get $US from Cdn, muliply by two thirds, I think. :P

Hi,
The first step for connecting multiple PC via one phone line is to lan all these PCs. I just did so for my own PCs and it's real fun having access to all harddisks available in all machines.
The second step is to get some software that can act as a proxy-server. You need to install this on the PC having the phone-line. While this PC is connected, all other PCs can do nearly everything using the proxy-server.
We recently connected 20 PCs using one of our NT Servers over one ISDN dial-up line (that was a temporary thing as we shifted ISPs). We used a free proxy-server for that stuff. I think it's at http://www.sambar.com but there are others, too.

Meikel is correct. I've got a network at home, two PC's on a Novell IPX/IP network. You can get a PROXY software package that will allow both computers to dial using one modem. (Actually all you need is IP, a Hub, and the TP cable.) Here are some sites to try:
www.tucows.com (http://www.tucows.com)
www.winfiles.com (http://www.winfiles.com) (network section)
There are lots of these software packages out there.
