View Full Version : question about server slowness

Question: when is this move from Sprintlink supposed to happen? I'm curious, because I am getting emails about downloading problems from my site. One guy says he's running an ISDN and can't get more than 1-2 kbytes / second, and then it stops altogether for him. Is this because of Sprintlink?

Is Sprintlink a part of Sprint communications, or long distance or whatever? Or is that just coincidence?

Anyway, just curious. I haven't really noticed anything myself, but I've never had complaints about speed since being on FQ until the last few days.

There are two hops that seem to be clogging up during prime times too often. For some all is fine... for others the complaint of slowness is happening. Best Andrew and I can tell from talking to many of the users is that half are bragging about speed and the other half are complaining about slowness http://www.aota.net/ubb/frown.gif

We were planning on the move already being accomplished... the upstream should have had it ready by now... We're staying on top of it and still pushing to have it done this week....

i am grateful someone asked this question, i was beginning to think it was just me... and my site loads a lot slower now than before. ;( and last night, i was having probs connecting via ws-ftp. ANd I noticed too what deb is talking about.. shoot.. i was trying to run a trace on it, and kept timing out .. I don't remember where exactly.. but figured this is where the problem was. http://www.aota.net/ubb/frown.gif

I hope whatever is being done will speed things up, cuz I have another domain I would like to bring here.

i am making as much sense as I know how. *sick today*.. but it is boring lying in bed .. http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif

Go Deb! Kick some backbone butt!

The slowness problem is getting horrible. It lets up later in the evening, but I usually have to wait nearly five to ten minutes to download 500k files now. It doesn't matter if I'm on a T1 or home at my 56k (soon to be a cable modem, yay!), the file transfer rates are the same- slow.

I know you're probably pushing on the upstream people already, but please get a deadline from them regarding when you can make the move... and hold them to it! http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

Forgive me for laughing really really hard... http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif

Working with Telco's is the ***most*** excruiating experience I've ever endured... SprintLink and Sprint Communications are one in the same...

SprintLink lately has been clogged horribly in Atlanta (which is one of our major routing points)... Atlanta is also one of the largest Internet HUB's in the US... They are feeling their share of growing pains as well as more and more people jump on the Internet a day...

That's why we are dumping SprintLink public backbone and going with UUnet's since they own almost all of their backbone... They are the oldest private backbone and also the most expensive, but their quality of equipment and technical expertiese helps to offset the increased costs...

Every backbone, at one time or another, experience major throughput delays - SprintLink has been quite consistant about it though refusing to fix/replace their '208.12.128.x' bundle of routers...

Right now, our only delay is getting the green light to switch the server over to UUnet's lines... They have 2 problem spots in the routing which they are aware of and being worked on... After those are fixed we will get the go ahead to link in and broadcast our new routing tables and DNS links...

I think this is going to be the loooooongest 4 months that I will have to endure as we are on our way to the new OC-12 NOC... FQuest is scrambling to get the load spread out and working on negotiating with multiple NOCs to house our servers in the interim (confidential)...

I believe that by the end of February, everything should be smooth sailing again as the upgrades and changes are solidified... I don't plan to get caught offguard again with explosive growth overruning our capacity... Telco's don't respond as quickly as FQuest does... Shame, I'd like to teach them something about how one business can domino effect another business... As they say, stuff rolls downhill and we are on the catching end...

Hmmmm, on another one of my Rant's... We have streamlined our Internic Domain Transfer system, that *has* cut transfers from the sloooooow agonizing 3 - 4 week wait, to less then 5 days (avg 3)... http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif Nobody said it could be done, well darnit - we did it... Woohoo... Internic transfers initiated 2/6/99 or later are on the new methadology, which are jammin right along...

Heh. That's why it's so slow.

I live in Atlanta.

:P AND... AND... I use Earthlink, which uses Sprintlink's backbone... :P

Oh well. Andrew, we appreciate your hard work and hope things go smoothly these next four months for you! http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

Hi:
I just signed up with FutureQuest for the site http://freewarejava.com However, I noticed the response time and speed of my site is *quite* slow. From reading the postings on this forum, it seems that this is only a temporary situation, and that server speed will be back to normal soon... Is my assumption correct? Thanks!

Yes, the problem seems to lie inside one of the Sprintlink routers... "on again off again" as far as clogs go... The move off of Sprint should take care of it cuz the servers themselves are doing great...

We're plucking out the problem spots one by one....
