View Full Version : FTP Uploads & File Permissions: Changed
This notice is for ALL sites hosted on the FutureQuest server, Lils.net, Susogi.net and FQuest.
Due to the common problems of many being unsure of what to set the permissions at on their files and/or not knowing how to change the file permissions Andrew has modified the FTP server to accomplish the following:
If you upload something that looks like an executable script it will automagically be set to mode 755
If you upload something that does not look like an executable script it will automagically set the mode to 644
You still have the ability to change mod these files to anything you like. (noting that you still must use mode 755 for exectuable scripts in the cgi-bin) but this should ease the number of "it doesn't work" questions when the mode has not been changed to 755 as it is needed.
Enjoy!

mode, ahh, what?
Something veddy strange just occurred several times. I uploaded a couple new HTML files, the date appeared to be new, but they didn't really replace the original. Reloads of the web page weren't the new version. Then I'd download the file right back off the server, and it would be the old file - not the new one I'd just sent in!
I ended up deleting the files and THEN uploading them - that worked.
Wierd!
This is an FTP program situation and not a server issue... It really depends on what program you are using. For example... one the ways CuteFTP snags an unregistered user is by losing the ability to overwrite.. forcing you to delete the file and then upload the new one.
I would check out the program you are using and start at the HELP index searching for overwrite and see if it contains a clue as to why that might be happening to you.
Hope this helps
Deb
Probably right.
I just got a brand new version of my ftp software - fixed some bugs and maybe added a new one? ;-)

I have CuteFTP 2.5 Pro, registered, and it will overwrite if the new file is smaller, but if the new one is bigger, it appends. So in my HTML, I will end up with something like this:
</body>
</html>
tle.jpg" border=0>
</body>
</html>
That's just an example from my head (wierd things in there, you know?) Anyway, that's what it does, ASCII or binary, doesn't make a difference. Even if the dates are drastically different. I can't find an option to change this.
The only exception is if I choose to edit a file on the server, it will download it, open notepad, and re-upload it, overwriting properly every time.
I just delete first, then upload. It has become a habit for so long that I do the same thing on my hard drive - delete, then copy / move the new file.
Then again, I do wierd things like that.

Turned out to be a bug where it wasn't resetting the resume flag (so it didn't really overwrite) - after I reported it the author, he quickly came out with a new version.
That guy behind FlashFXP is really on the ball.

Maybe, but how did a bug like that get past beta testing? Or is it in beta now?
I'm using AbsoluteFTP because I'm a fan of Van Dyke software in general. It might be a coincidence, but I requested that a feature be added to the permission change window and within a few days, got email back telling me that the feature had been added and gave me an address to download a (alpha) copy to test.

You know how it is, Benson. Code new stuff in and other things pop up in your code. It happens to the mighty Microsoft, and to little old me.
