Hi everyone!

I have a question about the Win95 dial-up, and the start-bar/task-bar. We have noticed that on almost every other puter we have used to get on the internet, once the dial-up connection is made, it minimized down to an itty-bitty icon in the row of itty-bitty icons on the right side of the taskbar. On our puter, we get the same icon on the row on right side, but we also get a big full sized button on the left of the task bar, right there with Netscape and WS_FTP and whatever else I might have windows open for. How can I make it not put the full sized button there? And while we're on the subject, how do I take icons out of that row of icons on the left? They're programs that put themselves there but I really rarely use and I'd rather not have them cluttering up the space there, since I can get to them from the programs menu off the start button anyway.

No rush, we've been living with this for a year already, but if anyone knows how to deal with it off hand, it would be great!

Thanks in advance!

I'm running win95, and my dialup always puts the bigger button in the taskbar too (in addition to the little blinky modem picture in the tray).

I'm not quite clear what you mean by the 'row of icons on the left'. Do you mean the stuff shown when you hit the [start] button? win98 also has another tray on the left side with shortcuts, in addition to the start button, the normal taskbar buttons, and the tray on the right side, so that's what I'm picturing when you say stuff on the left side. Please explain a hair further, as I quite often have trouble grasping what people say http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

she means them icons where your little binky modem icon goes after you connect. Someof them start from the startu[ part of the sort cut ljnks in y9our start menu - youknwo start programs start up =- so ou can delete them from that - others just start up some have an option to disable if yu open the program up. others Im too lazy to figure out how to disable them so I just exit out of them by right clicking then choosing exit fromthe menu when they come up - cuz man for every icon up ther a program is running and using up valuable ram - argharghar so if you dont use that stuff you're wasting valuable memory :/
what programs specifically? mabe I know how to get em off of there.

if hey are programs o lie never ever use ever you may as well uninstall them completely. why waste the hd space?

PS I dont have time to liook just now but there must besomwthing in the diual up settings that turns the big icon box onand off - geez that is sooo annoying! fool around with it - check the dial up settings bpth fromt he icon ithe dial up folder and form the control panel (in either network or meodems)- my guess is that there's a thingy somewhere in there that turns hat annoying feature on and off.

If your talking about the program minimized on the taskbar. When you click on it, look at the bottom of the window, and you should see a check box with something like "check here if you don't want to see this again". I used to see the same stupid thing and that fixed it.

Hope that helps.

Hi there! That was a great question. I wondered the same thing as I had junk over there on the left that I never used also. I just right-clicked on each one and selected "delete". Then I was asked if I was sure I wanted to send "whatever" to the recycle bin and I said **** tootin' and away they went. Then I was able to drag the width of that area down, making more room for the active stuff. Hope that helps!

Thanks everyone!

Sorry we took so long to get back to this, but life got in the way there for a while.

No luck finding where to make the connection minimized button go away, but I did take your suggestions and get rid of some things that were filling up my itty bitty icons tray, that I hardly ever use and could easily re-install, like Corel WordPerfect and Stuff 7. I also found out where to get rid of the stupid "battery remaining: unknown" itty binky icon (this computer has never had a battery, it's a mid-tower with separate monitor and keyboard). Except along the way, I lost my itty binky blinky connection icon in the tray, now I only have the minimized button on the right. Oops.

In the middle of all that, I borrowed Shaytar's Win95 disk, and the puter told me it's a newer version than what I have installed on my puter. I'm thinking this is maybe the problem with the connection minimized button. So, I'm going to back up my important stuff and let it do it's "update" thing that it offered to do, and see if that helps. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks again everyone.

Well, I'm not sure what exactly did it, but after an update from the Win95 disk, two more restarts, and a download and install of MS's dial-up networking update, and two more restarts, I have ONLY the itty binky icon in the tray. The weird thing is, on the way, I ended up with ONLY the minimized button, and no icon in the tray at all for it! Then when the icon came back, without the button, it's different than the itty binky icon that I used to have. Win95 is SOoOo weird sometimes. At least it's all fixed!

Thanks everyone for your input!
