View Full Version : IE 5 and 404 Pages :(
Have any of you that have upgraded to IE 5 noticed that it now generates its own not found page?
I no longer see the 404 pages that the site owners create... I only see the one IE came up with http://www.aota.net/ubb/frown.gif
I'm off to hunt out the fix for this... unless one of you already found it? <hint nudge hint>

now, Sam I am, how is this possible? *sigh sigh sigh*
How can a browser generate its own page? The browser seems to have too much control over what is being seen on the internet? Oh no! A browser with a mind of its own.
Pondering this... a .htaccess file tells the server what to do, no?
hey deb, i have an idea.. go here:

if ya see a 404 error.. let me know. that has its own error page for that dir. If it works.. couldn't we put a .htaccess file in the www dir? (thinking outloud) -- i don't have IE5

Hearts, there already is an .htaccess file in your www root that sends a 404 page http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif If not the default is apache sending it's own idea of a 404 page. Either way, it's an HTML page.
What IE is doing is looking for the word 404 in the title - which sucks, because what if you go to a UBB post entitled "404 - File Not Found"? hehe - would be interesting http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif
That is the only way a browser can know whether it is a 404 page or not. Let's test that theory. Go here in IE5:
http://www.vdj.net/404.shtml
If that doesn't show up, when there really is no 404 error, then it's IE looking in the title. I think that's one of the stupidest things they could have done to a browser http://www.aota.net/ubb/frown.gif Glad as heck I didn't download it http://www.aota.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

I'm getting the appropriate 404 page that Apache serves up for Justins, Hearts and Wabbit's pages using IE5.

hhrrrmmm I downloaded mine from the Altavista site with all of their additions to it.. wonder if I didn't get an extra "gift" due to that... I'll do some more digging...
Thanks for the feedback... I'd rather think it's just me and those who did what I did for the upgrade (whatever it was) rather then the whole IE5 community...

Tools -> Internet Options
Advanced Tab
Browsing Category
UNCheck "Show Friendly HTTP Error Messages"
That will get rid of most of the 'friendly' pages, including the 404.

Yes, THANKS CHARLES. I looked all over for this option and missed it about three times!
At first I thought this feature was cool. Afterall, a page not found message is a page not found message and if they integrated it, then great.
However, their implementation is so poor it is WORSE than the original 404 when no alternate page has been given by the web site. For example, when the page displays, it replaces the address in the address bar with the address of the 404 message page and then suggests you try to "refresh" the page. DUH! Also, the MS generated will generate many, many more "false" displays than when the page is generated from the web site.

I've seen the nasty 404 cheap shot that Microsoft has done.[nbsp][nbsp]To prevent IE5 from showing their own custom "friendly" error page, you just have to create your 404 error pages so that they're greater than X kilobytes.[nbsp][nbsp]Now I'm saying "X" because I forgot what the size has to be...
If you don't really have much to say in your error page but still would rather have it displayed than MS's "friendly" crap, just add some invisible comments to make your file bigger.
Example:
<!--JUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJ UNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNK-JUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJ UNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNK-JUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJ UNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNK-JUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJUNKJ UNKJUNKJUNK-->
