Hi Binky,
I just checked Vizbook out and it looks very neat. I've downloaded it and am just about to install it although I saw Justin got there earlier so he may well have it up and running.
Will keep you posted http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

hehe - I went there and posted just to check it out, but haven't the time to download it right now. I will give it a shot within the next couple of days though. Looks like a nice guestbook - only needs a small handful of mods to make it perfect http://www.aota.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hey Justin, he had a notice on his site:
DOWNLOAD
Before down loading, you must agree to use the scripts as is, changing only where indicated by the author. If you do not agree, DON'T download it, else it will be copied / used illegally!
so, ya might wanna respect him and discuss it first before making any changes to his script.

After much research I found the guestbook I want for one of my sites but have no idea how to install it. Maybe someone here has installed it already and can help.
It's "VizBook" and can be found at
www.dtp-aus.com/cgiscript/vizbook.shtml (http://www.dtp-aus.com/cgiscript/vizbook.shtml)
If someone could actually just install it for me I'd come to his/her home and vacuum their drapes, or something. (Gee, I wish I had more useful skills to swap http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif)
Hey, how come I'm a "Junior" member? I'll bet I'm one of the oldest here!

Geez - maybe I won't download it then. My fun comes in modifying scripts, not plug 'n' play! Eek. That stinks. Where's the fun in installing a script if you can't edit it? http://www.aota.net/ubb/frown.gif
Oh, well. Looked like it could have been a nice one to play with.

hey Justin, I am sure if ya email him, he won't mind as long as you tell him the types of changes ya make. And as for editing.. you can edit the htmls and stuff like that.. he just don't want anyone messing with his script.. and he might feel that way, should someone go in and edit his script, screw it up and want his tech support. He seems to highly support his work. Just email him and see what he says.. http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

I just got a Vizbook up and running on my site. It wasn't that hard to setup although the makedir.cgi supplied with it wasn't really a lot of good as it creates the main dir below the root; kinda hard to get to with your browser http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif It was quite particular when it came to entering absolute and relative paths in the config file and personally I didn't think the instructions were that clear should you happen to be a complete newbie to cgi installation. Other than that it seems very good with a lot more features than the UBB Guestbook.
Anyway, please go sign something fellow FQuesties http://www.aota.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

A great big thank you to Hearts for getting my VizBook up and running. I'm still playing with the settings but can see no way to increase maximum characters to more than 1000 in the "Comments" field. Has anyone who's tried this guestbook seen a way to change this?
Also, text doesn't wrap, which I think makes it difficult for anyone writing lengthy messages.
Otherwise, a dandy guestbook.

Binky,
I was going to ask about how to implement text wrap as well. Can't be that difficult surely. Works fine on all UBB's.
Dean.

Hey Dean, I am gonna be working on that later today... When I applied the wrap, the table stretched all the way to the right of the screen forever, I found a NOWRAP code in the tables, however, I believe that is in his scripts. ALSO, I found the line that limits the amount of characters.. but I have a question if someone wouldn't mind to answer.. (please)
if (length($FORM{'msg'}) > 5000) {$FORM{'msg'} = substr($FORM{'msg'},1,1000); &resubmit_add('COMMENTS too long - 5000 char max');}
i want to change this to 5000 characters see where it says 1,1000 what do i change that too? I already knew where the others were to be changed, but in this substring.. i don't know the answer.. if it should be 1,5000 or 5,5000. I would guess 1,5000.
I looked at his code, and as for html.. it looks like he used Frontpage.
give me your thoughts, thanks...

Binky,
I checked his forums out on my first visit but found no mention of this problem http://www.aota.net/ubb/frown.gif
Hey Hearts,
I'm now on Day 4 of 'Teach yourself CGI in 21 days' 17 days & 537 more pages to go http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif I'm sure I'll crack the text wrap problem very shortly. Keep ya posted http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

Boy, that was quick. Just posted 2 questions in that CGI forum. Replies:
Ron (VizBook author)explains how to solve the text wrap problem:
http://dtp-aus.com/cgi-bin/cgi_bbs.cgi?read=208
and how to increase maximum allowable characters in messages (limited to 1,000 by default):

VizBook's author has a forum for his CGI scripts at http://dtp-aus.com/cgi-bin/cgi_bbs.cgi .

Okay... BINKY has this scrip running on his site, he has complained that he is getting an internal server error, but he can still post.
I went.. posted and posted, and had no such error.
so .. i went to the thread where deb posted about checking up on scripts. and i started running things with that command and one of the files threw out a bunch of info... which I could not read, and posted Terra over there where deb posted.. (am i confusing or what?) hehehhehe
anyways..
i could not retrieve all the info, but got some of this.. which i am almost certain this is not where the server error is.
Scalar value @tmp[15] better written as $tmp[15] at editform.r line 309.
there were a ton of these listed.. but like i said, i could not review the whole list.
by changing this to the recommendations of telnet..does this alter the output of the code to do what the author did not intend?
and further this.. his syntax came out OK

That is a warning, not an error. If it says syntax ok, then the script should run. I've seen that same warning a lot, and I'm not up enough on Perl to know why it would be any better written the way it says, but either way it's just a warning.
I never use the -w unless I'm really stumped. Too many warnings pop up and may hide the actual problem. Just use the -c:
perl -c /big/dom/xdomain/cgi-bin/broken_script.pl
Once you have no actual errors, you can then check for warnings, if you care (I don't at this stage, not until it does work).
Hope this helps http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

well... I just wanted to see what it would tell me .. cuz I don't understand why he is showing an internal error and when I posted, I never got one? duz this mean, there is a flaw in the script or the server is skitzo?
Don't forget about
use CGI::Carp qw(fatalsToBrowser);
A lot of times that'll tell you approximately where the error is, and it'll display it in the browser instead of a 500 error. Unfortunately it doesn't always work. But for the times it does work, it's value is priceless.
Syntax OK doesn't always mean the script is good, all it means is the syntax is good. There's no way for Perl to be able to check the logic of a script, which is quite often the cause of script failures.

that is funny..telling me to not forget something I didn't even know about.. *laughing*
well.. the error is infrequent.. I myself have not encountered that error. So I will leave things as they are for now, and let the user let me know of any probs down the road.
thanks del! http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif

As author of VizBook, I find this thread quite interesting. I would like to comment that recently VizBook was upgraded from v1.53 to 1.54 and most of the problems mentioned here were addressed some time ago.
The "comments" max length has been increased to 2500 and will be an admin option in the next version although it is already enabled in other versions I install for clients. One or two other "internals" have been added also. Sorry I had to remove the script forum - it may reappear later this year.
Enjoy!....and thanks for the feedback.
