What: IMAP server software switching from Courier to Dovecot
When: March 4th 2011
Window: 11PM to 12AM
Who: Users of IMAP on PT01 initially
Impact: All sites will be migrated to the new software. No downtime is anticipated.
The server software responsible for IMAP access on the POP toasters is being switched from Courier IMAP (http://www.courier-mta.org/imap/) to Dovecot (http://www.dovecot.org/). Dovecot is a much more efficient implementation of the IMAP protocol, and promises to support more standard IMAP features.
This change is being implemented due to resource problems with the Courier IMAP software. Courier makes use of very few indexes, and as such certain common search operations occasionally cause major resource consumption on the POP toasters.
While the indices used by Courier and Dovecot do differ, the switch is set up such that the necessary indexes will be automatically converted the first time a mailbox is accessed by IMAP. This process is nearly instantaneous, so no downtime should be observed.
This conversion will be completed in two phases. At the time specified above, all accounts on PT01 will be switched over to using Dovecot. This server was chosen as it has the smallest number of accounts and the least frequent access rate to IMAP. Once we are satisfied that no problems remain from the switch, all remaining POP toasters will be switched over as well.
