View Full Version : Installing Discus before I'm "official"?

Hi new neighbors :-)!

My original Discus forum was installed, and running well (only for a few days to customize it) on another server. The reason I moved was because (among other things)... when I finally got them to remove FP extensions, and enable SSI & pass protection, some of my scripts were corrupted, some disappeared - gone.

So, I set up an account with FutureQuest, and finished paperwork with internic. Goldtalk.com (two weeks old) now resides at http://xgoldtalk.futurequest.net/ AND at the other server, with whom my account is active until 14th of April. Internic may have my new ip propagated in the next day, or 2 weeks from now.

Due to the hassles with the server, the forum was already behind promised schedule. Is there any way for me to install it on my FutureQuest server so that it doesn't point to the old GoldTalk now, and will also be appropriate one the transfer is complete?
Is there anyone here who can assist me with FQ's directory structure? The best places to put the admin files - not for public view especially.

Thank you all so much, If anyone can help me over this hurdle, I will be forever grateful (and promise to help out here as much as I can!)

Hi DeAnna, welcome! I have recently installed Discus (fantastic! pgm) on my site here at FQ. While the installation went without a hitch, I don't think I would try it until the dns's are "seeded" with the new info. Perhaps the out-of-service time will be worth it for a trouble-free move? I just tried to install a simple mailing list cgi script on a site before DNS propagation and about pulled out what little hair I have left..there were too many things that I could not test properly (or properly in my mind anyway) without having the browser "seeing" the proper address.

Hello,

I'd be glad to help you out. I'm not too familiar with Discuss itself but I've installed and tweaked many forum scripts. Are you wanting it to work both now and after the domain is fully transfered?

I'm not sure that would work correctly, but you can configure it where it will work for now and change the variables once Goldtalk.com points to the servers here. As long as the variables are set in a common file or via a control panel, it would only take a couple of minutes to reconfigure it.

Let me know where you want to start - you can send me an email if you like.

Hi everyone, I just wanted to say "Thanks" to Justin. I e-mailed him to take him up on his generous offer, but when I went to get the specifics, I decided to finish what I had started even tho it points to the non-permanent url. It works great! I took thorough notes so I will be happy to include the needed directions for anyone who wishes to use them as soon as I get a chance. Right now, I'm off to chaperone my 1st grader's field trip :-)
